LEST Monologue & Duo Performance events give students the opportunity to grow as actors in a positive and encouraging environment. The goal is to celebrate each student’s hard work while offering helpful feedback to strengthen their skills. This event is designed to be educational and uplifting — not just a critique.
Led by Professor Tony Vezner from Concordia University Irvine, students will perform prepared selections and receive thoughtful feedback from trained adjudicators.
Monologues (Individual Performances)
Students prepare two contrasting monologues from published plays.
The total performance time is 3 minutes.
Performers begin with a brief introduction stating their name, the titles of the pieces, and the playwright.
Students must wear all black clothing and may only use one chair (no props or costumes).
Judges evaluate skills such as voice, character development, movement, focus, and overall preparation.
Duos (Partner Performances)
Two students perform a scene together.
The time limit is 5 minutes.
The focus is on teamwork, communication, and strong character interaction.
Students receive feedback to help them grow in collaboration and performance skills.
Scoring & Feedback
Students are scored using a performance rubric (Superior, Excellent, Good, or Fair). Each participant receives written feedback from the judges to celebrate strengths and provide suggestions for improvement.
The heart of this event is learning and growth. Adjudicators serve as educators, offering respectful, constructive feedback to help students build confidence and deepen their understanding of theatre.
