♟️ The LEST Chess Tournament is a friendly but competitive event designed to challenge students’ strategy, focus, and critical thinking skills. The competition follows guidelines from the United States Chess Federation (USCF) and provides a structured, fair tournament experience.
This event gives students the opportunity to compete against other strong players in a supportive environment.
Divisions
Students compete in three grade divisions:
5th & 6th Grade (combined)
7th Grade
8th Grade
Each division awards an Individual Champion.
How the Tournament Works
All students must check in by 8:00 AM.
Each participant will play three matches (possibly four).
The tournament follows the Swiss System, meaning:
No one is eliminated.
Every student plays each round.
Winners are determined by total points at the end.
Scoring
Win: 1 point
Draw: 0.5 point
Loss: 0 points
Bye (if needed): 0.5 point
The student with the highest total score in each division wins.
What to Expect
Standard tournament chess sets are provided.
Chess clocks are generally not used (unless needed).
A referee oversees all games and makes final decisions.
Students will record their moves on score sheets (provided).
After each game, players step outside the competition room to review games with coaches or parents.
Important Guidelines
Students are expected to follow standard chess etiquette, including:
No talking during matches (except necessary chess terms like “check” or “resign”).
“Touch-move” rule applies (if you touch it, you move it).
Call the referee immediately if there is a concern.
Proper board setup is required.
Parents and coaches may observe quietly from behind their child but may not communicate or gesture during play.
