The National Design Project is a design event for youths to raise the appreciation of design and design as a process for creative problem solving. Students from all levels of general education participated to tackale a real-world issue impacting our society. As a tool, Design Thinking is used to solve complex problems such as climate change, poverty and ageing population. The brief for this project is to use Design Thinking to address the theme, Design for Wellness.
The submission needs to creatively solve a wellness issue our society is facing. Students could explore environmental, social, workplace, mental or physical welnness challenges to develop unique and innovative solutions to address these problems.

2024
The SJI team which won the Certificate of Distinction in the National Design Project in 2023 was invited to participate in a 5 day internship at Temasek Polytechnic from 27 May to 31 May 2024. This innovative and passionate group of students consisting of Joshua Chew (LE303), Adrien Lim (ML301), Elliot D'Cruz (ML301), Gabriel Ho (ML301) and Jayden Ong (MN303) started the seed idea for Project Hive 5 when they were in the Innomakers Programme last year.
The Hive 5's strong social stand towards empowering the elderly population in Toa Payoh with independence and enriching their daily lives with social interaction in a specially designed community centre impressed the Design Council Singapore. Hence, they were invited to present at the media launch of the Design Education Advisory Committee's report 2.0 on 13 June 2024. The students were also interviewed by the media (CNA, Ch 8 and 联合早报).

Joshua Chew's reflection:
Visiting DP Architects was an enlightening experience that offered much insight into the scenes that shape Singapore’s urban landscape. I recall being warmly welcomed by the CEO, Mr Seah, who shared with us some of their recently completed projects. One particular project that stood out to me was SAFRA Choa Chu Kang, a place that I frequent often. It was a striking moment when I realised how the work of architects translates so directly into our daily lives.
The visit to DP Architects helped me connect the dots between what we had learned in the classroom and how design thinking is applied in real-world projects. I began to understand that good design is about more than just form, but it is also about how the space functions to serve users and tackle real-world problems. This reaffirmed what I had learned during the National Design Project, which is the importance of viewing the world through the user’s lens
