Final Presentation Preparation Time!!

Given that we would like to spend as much time as possible creating data in the next few weeks, and since none of the class has ever made a Story Map or Map Story, we will use old fashioned powerpoint in a template that may permit me to create a single story map for the class later. So your Story Map grade will just be on the powerpoint content and how well you follow these instructions. I've created this YouTube video to explain how to use the template, which can be found here or in the email I sent you.

The final presentations will take place on Wednesday May 4 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. normal class time in the Holden Hall GIS Lab. I will be inviting a few visitors from campus to listen in, so feel free to also invite an audience to learn more about what you have done! We will go in the order of East to West : Bangladesh, Mozambique, Angola, and Ecuador.

Please let me know if you have questions after watching the video and looking at the template.

COUNTRY PROFILES / ISSUE BRIEFINGS assignment instructions (Due March 30)

TASK 6

The last of our discussion topics will be about Challenges in Open Mapping for Resilience. For this task, as usual:

1) Read the topic discussion page.

2) Be sure to post your comment in reaction to the reflection questions (or any other question that is relevant or salient) by Monday 8 am (due 2/29).

3) Upload your bibliographic citation to the bibliography page by Wednesday 6 pm (3/2). Feel free to pick one of the article references to annotate this time from those cited in the reading (see list in attachment)!

You are always welcome to email me or contact me with questions.

TASK 5

The topic for the coming week will be on VGI in Humanitarian and Development Activities. For this task, as usual:

Read the topic discussion page. There are several links for you to explore, which you do not have to read in entirely. However DO READ the links that are indicated in bold with the words "Read this" ! Also, there is a video on that page for you to watch. At the end you will need to read about the three USAID projects that are the areas of focus for our class to map in the coming weeks.

Be sure to post your comment in reaction to the reflection questions (or any other question that is relevant or salient) by Monday 8 am (due 2/22).

Because of the topic, you may not find "traditional" literature this week, so for your annotated citation this week, you can also include news articles or blogs about specific VGI projects. Upload that to the bibliography page by Wednesday 6 pm (2/24).

You are always welcome to email me or contact me with questions!

TASK 4

This week we introduce the concept of Open Geospatial Data, Open Street Map, and the OSM Community. For this task, there are three parts for you to do:

A) Just as before, make sure you do the reading on this page in its entirety and be sure to click on all of the links that are presented in bold. A few additional optional links are provided just for fun in italic font, and you are not obligated to look through those. Be sure to post your comment in reaction to the reflection questions (or any other question that is relevant or salient) by Monday 8 am (due 2/15).

B) Create your own OSM account following the instructions on the discussion page and insert it into our google spreadsheet (link provided on that page.)

C) As always, find and provide an annotated citation about this week's topic and upload it to the bibliography page by Wednesday 6 pm (2/17).

Please don’t hesitate to email me or contact me with questions!

TASK 3

Many of you are already ready for next week’s topic, so take a look at the next discussion page:

What do we mean by resilience?

TASK 3: Instructions are the same as last week: comment by Monday 8 am (2/8) and annotated citation by Wednesday 6 pm (2/10).

Please don’t hesitate to email me or contact me with questions!

In case you need extra help with the library resources, our personal librarian for geography has created a page for our class to locate the most relevant sets of resources here:

http://guides.library.ttu.edu/aecontent.php?pid=692894

I’ve also created a page to archive the tasks in case you ever need to find the latest instructions here:

https://sites.google.com/site/youthmappers/emailinstructions

And now there is a calendar that I will update regularly. You can subscribe to page changes to see any of the latest additions or edits (follow the instructions at the top of the page for how.)

https://sites.google.com/site/youthmappers/calendar

All of these links are available from the home page, too in the left hand index.

MAPPY WEEKEND!

TASK 2

As you know, each week, I will post a page on our wiki that summarizes a topic and provides a few links for you to read, including typically an article or book chapter and some background information about the theme. This will be our discussion topic for the week. Please do the following:

1) Read this week’s post, links, and reflection questions at the page at:

https://sites.google.com/site/youthmappers/discussion-topics/international-development-and-usaid

2) When you are signed in to your google account, you should be able to comment on this page at the bottom (see my example.) After you read through the material provided, carefully reflect on the important concepts and provide a response in the comment section at the bottom of the page. You may respond in any one of the following ways:

a) Briefly jot down some of your thoughts about something you learned from the reading

b) Respond (considerately!) to thoughts of others already posted

c) Reflect on one of the questions provided (but be careful! they are meant to be thought-provoking, not to be answered!)

d) Or provide a thoughtful question of your own.

You should provide at least one comment but are free to comment more than once.

Your (first) comment is due by Monday at 8:00 a.m.

3) Then you should search for additional relevant literature and prepare an annotated bibliographic entry on this topic of discussion. You may chose whatever concept or interesting lesson you learned. These entries will be compiled and shared by the classroom for later reference on this page:

https://sites.google.com/site/youthmappers/annotated-bibliography

See that page for the full instructions on how to compose and submit your bibliographic entry. (I recommend you read it BEFORE you start reading/writing). See also the example provided for citation style and length.

Your annotated bibliographic entry is due by NEXT Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

TASK 1

Dear 4320 GEOG Open Mappers !

It was great to meet (most of) you this past Wednesday night. I am really looking forward to this class and working with you on learning and creating something innovative at the same time.

1. In the spirit of “OPEN” mapping, we will be collecting all of your independent assignments as outputs into a wiki, using Google Sites. I will add you as a user to our course site this week, but first I need you to let me know what is your sign-in email address that you use with your Google account. If you do not yet have a Google account, you need to create one here:

https://accounts.google.com/SignUpWithoutGmail?hl=en

NOTE: You do NOT have to create a new Gmail address if you don’t want one – you can use your @ttu.edu address if you wish when you sign up. To learn more, see their FAQ here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/1728595?hl=en

2. Once you create your account if you need one, let me know which email address you use to sign in by entering it into the google spreadsheet next to your name here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LDLW5FT9g_L0mameOO8z_7ARnJp8-02rLFiHbxCRbpk/edit?usp=sharing

This will be your first task as part of your participation grade. Please complete this by Wednesday, January 27th, class time, 6:00 PM. The first reading and discussion will be posted as the first page of the wiki by that evening and I will send an email to alert you to where to find it.

Please send me any questions by email, or you can find me on gchat from time to time.
