Wikipedia has an entry for Zero Population Growth - it probably has good info on the topic also

Worldwide - 1 million people die annually in motor vehicle accidents - 1 million die by suicide - 500,000 are murdered
drownings - ? - versus floods from storms ? - poisonings ? - versus ? drug ODs ? - fires ? - falls ? - etc ?
I guess the bottom line question here is - How many die a horrible death that could be ameliorated by an effective emergency response? (Maybe alot - I need to find out how many "obviously dead" cases are found by first responders - my guess is 1% of all cases - so therefore - the first responders think that there is value in rushing most victims to a hospital - which tells us that maybe lots of people could be saved by faster dispatch and response)
