Unrecognised, Self Declared States Around The World

Found below are twelve self declared but unrecognised states found around the world. An unrecognised state is defined as a sovereign state which has not been recognised by the United Nations but of course are very much recognised by those who live in them.

THE ARAB DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF SAHRAWI

The Arab Democratic Republic of Sahwari, formerly known as Western Sahara, is a 266,000 square kilometer area situated in the North African country of Morocco which has a population of 513,000 people.

The republic declared self independence on the 27th of February 1976 and named it's de - fact capital city El Aaiun.

As yet the republic has not been officially recognised by the United Nations.

THE AUTONOMOUS REPUBLIC OF CRIMEA

The Crimean Peninsula is a former region of Ukraine located in the Black Sea some 26,100 square kilometers in size and with a population of just over two million people.

The peninsula became part of the Russian Federation in March 2014 after a public referendum voted in favour of the transition after problems with the Ukrainian government of that time.

The rest of the world however accused the Russian government of their taking of Crimea as an act of aggression and therefore does not officially recognise the move.

The area's de facto capital city is Semferepol.

NAGORNO - KARABAKH REPUBLIC

The Nagorno - Karabakh Republic is an 11,458 square kilometer area situated within the central Asian country of Azerbaijan which has a population of 143,600 people.

The state declared self independence on the 6th of January 1992 and named it's de - facto capital city Stepanakert.

As yet the republic has not been officially recognised by the United Nations.

THE PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES

Probably the most contoversial of all the world's unrecognised states are the Palestinian Territories which are a 2,230 square kilometer area which consist of the three regions known as the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip which are officially Israeli occupied, semi autonomous regions with a combined population of 3.9 million people.

Palestine declared self independence on the 15th of November 1988.

The territories consider their capital city as Jerusalem, as does Israel.

The Palestinian Territories, although recognised by most people around the world as Palestine, have yet to be officially recognised by the United Nations.

THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF DONETSK

On the 7th of April 2014 militant rebels took control of the once Ukrainian oblast / province of Donetsk. Although winning an independence referendum in May of 2014, the self proclaimed state is still suffering from military conflict and has yet to be recognised by the United Nations.

THE REPUBLIC OF ABKHAZIA

The Republic of Abkhazia - the green area on the above map - is an 8,660 square kilometer area situated within the Eurasian country of Georgia which has a population of 240,700 people..

The state declared self independence on the 20th of June 1990, and named it's de - facto capital city Sukhumi.

As yet the republic is not officially recognised by the United Nations.

THE REPUBLIC OF KOSOVA

The Republic of Kosova is a 10,908 square kilometer area situated between the European countries of Serbia and Albania, which is officially part of Serbia, and has a population of 1.8 million people.

declared self independence on the 17th of February 2008, and named it's de - facto capital city Pristina.

As yet the republic is officially unrecognised by the United Nations.

SOMALILAND

The Republic of Somaliland is a 137,600 square kilometer area situated in the north, west of the African country of Somalia which has a population of 3.5 million people.

The republic declared self independence on the 18th of May 1991 and named it's de - facto capital city Hargeisa.

As yet the republic is not officially recognised by the United Nations.

THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH OSSETIA

The Republic of South Ossetia - the mauve area on the above map - is a 3,900 square kilometer area situated within the Eurasian country of Georgia which has a population of 55,000 people.

The republic declared self independence on the 28th of November 1991, and named it's de - facto capital city Tashkinvali.

As yet the republic has not been officially recognised by the United Nations.

TAIWAN / THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA

The island of Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China, is a 36,191,000 square kilometer island situated off the coast of China whch has a population of 23.3 million people.

Taiwan declared self independence from China on the first of January 1912 and named it's capital city Taipei.

The country has never officially been recognised by the United Nations, and officially remains an autonomous territory of China.

TRANSNISTRIA

Transnistria, also known as the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, is a 4,163 square kilometer area situated along the border between the European countries of Moldova and The Ukraine which has a population of 517,963 people.

The republic declared self independence from Moldova on the 2nd of September 1990 and named it's de - facto capital city Tiraspol.

The republic has yet to be officially recognised by the United Nations.

THE TURKISH REPUBLIC OF NORTHERN CYPRUS

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus covers an area of 3,355 square kilometers or 30% of the northern part of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus which has a population of 294,906 people.

The republic declared self independence on the 15th of November 1983, nine years after their invasion of the northern part of the island in order to protect Turkish citizens who lived there during a Greek military coup.

The republic's de - fact capital city is Nicosia, as is the capital of the Greek south of the island, although the Turks have renamed it Lefkosa.

The Turkish action of declaring the northern half of the island a republic was classified as an illegal act by the United Nations and other than Turkey, the republic is not officially recognised by any other nation.
