The continent of America spans both hemispheres, almost from pole to pole, and covers a land area of 46,495,751 square kilometers.

The continent as a whole is the world's largest, but is geographically indexed by it's north, south and central regions.

In all the American Continent is home to the world's second largest country, which also has the world's longest coastline, Canada, the world's second longest river, the River Amazon, the world's largest rain forest, The Amazonian Rainforest, the world's two longest mountain ranges, The Andes at 7,242 kilometers long and the Rocky Mountains at 6,035 kilometers long, the world's highest volcano, Ojos del Salada in Chile at 6,893 meters high, the world's largest mountain lake, the 8,372 square kilometer, Lake Titicaca. the world's second largest freshwater lake, Lake Superior at 83,270 square kilometers and geographically, the world's largest island, Greenland, although politically the island is actually part of Europe.

The American Continent consists of forty nine countries in all, twenty six island groups of the Caribbean and the north Atlantic, seven countries that make up Central America and thirteen countries located in South America.

The American continent is unique for not having a single nation which is a monarchy, although the ten nations of Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, St Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia and St Vincent & the Grenadines are all Commonwealth Realms which have Queen Elisabeth II as their head of state.

The largest city on the entire continent is Sao Paulo in Brazil, with a population of 10.8 million people.

Only two nations in South America are land locked, Bolivia and Paraguay.
