TAKAVAU

Takavau is the smaller of the two states on Waikoa Island (the other being Minaue). The Minauans and the Takavaans represent different ethnic and linguistic groups, a major reason for the division of the island into two countries. The Takavaans got their own state in 1984 only. Takavau is the financial and commercial centre of the island, but tourism and viticulture are also of importance. The country's palm-tree lined sandy beaches are considered to be amongst the most beautiful in the Pacific, and the giant waves have made Takavau a Mecca to surfers.

The country has around 650.000 inhabitans.

President is Mr Auava Lehamina (since 1988).
