Mevu arms Mevu flag

Mevu is the oldest of the Antarctic states, founded 1970, on the initiative of the International Movement for a Co-operative State (IMCS), founded by Alun Jeuava in the 1950-ies. Following a turbulent period of internal conflict 1972-73, the country was consolidated 1973 as the Democratic People's Co-operative Republic of Mevu (DPCR Mevu). The settlement was temporarily evacuated 1976, but was resettled 1979. The official name was then changed to Democratic Co-operative City Republic of Mevu (DCCR Mevu), but in 1985, the old Republic of Mevu designation was re-introduced.

The present Mevu City was called Char 1970-76, while the former capital of Mevu, Amundsen Harbour, has been an independent state since 1979.

Fishing and whaling are the main industries.

There are 150.000 inhabitants in Mevu.

President is Mrs Liese Keller (since 1974).
