Lao Folk Dance (Fon)

Lao Folk Dance (Fon) is one of the most graceful and treasured performing arts of Lao culture. Passed down through generations, fon is a beautiful expression of tradition, storytelling, and cultural identity. Each dance features elegant, symbolic movements of the hands, head, and body that reflect harmony, respect, and the natural beauty of Lao life.

Rooted in the shared cultural heritage of Southeast Asia, Lao dance incorporates artistic influences that have evolved alongside neighboring traditions while maintaining its own distinctive style, music, costumes, and choreography. Every performance celebrates the history, values, and spirit of the Lao people.

Traditional dancers wear a sinh (handwoven Lao silk skirt), a matching silk sash, and beautifully crafted gold or silver jewelry that complements the costume. The vibrant attire, paired with traditional Lao music and synchronized movements, creates a captivating performance that is both elegant and meaningful.

At Wat Lao Saysettha, our Lao Dance Program welcomes children, youth, and adults who wish to learn and preserve this cherished art form. Students develop confidence, discipline, teamwork, and an appreciation for Lao culture while building lifelong friendships within the temple community.

Dance performances are presented throughout the year during major religious and cultural celebrations, including Lao New Year (Pi Mai Lao), Ork Phansa, temple anniversaries, community festivals, and other special events. These performances not only entertain but also serve as a meaningful way to honor our traditions and share the beauty of Lao culture with future generations.
