Trinidad and Tobago edged host nation Colombia 7-6, yesterday, to improve their chances of advancing to the semi-final round, at the CONSANAT South American Under-17 Water Polo Championships.

The victory was T&T's second in the seven-team tournament, following their 27-6 dismissal of Uruguay, on Tuesday.

Trinidad and Tobago have also lost twice—28-5 against Brazil and 9-7 in their showdown with Peru. Both losses were suffered on Wednesday.

Late yesterday, T&T were locked in battle with Venezuela. And this morning, they play their final match in the round-robin phase, against Argentina. Victory in one of those matches would send T&T into the semis.

In Wednesday's showdown with Brazil, Russell Ferreira added two goals to the eight he had scored against Uruguay for a two-match tally of ten.

Kieron Emanuel, Ryan West and captain Daniel Tardieu were also on target for T&T.

Ferreira was again outstanding in the narrow loss to Peru, scoring three goals. Jonathan Gillette and Ryan West chipped in with two apiece.

The victory was Peru's first at the tournament. The Peruvians lost to Colombia in their opening match and also went under to Venezuela.

In other games, Colombia defeated Venezuela 13-10 and got the better of Argentina 9-7, Brazil beat Venezuela 20-7, and Argentina stopped Uruguay 19-12.

Michele Gillette, wife of T&T team manager Peter Gillette, said she is very impressed with the tournament.

"The security is amazing. There were at least 40 policemen at the inauguration and a police mobile station. The team even has police escort with every trip. The transport is very reliable. Everything seems well organised.

"The media cameras were all around and the instant replays and broadcasting of the games live on this huge big screen are seriously impressive and exciting especially since we won (against) Uruguay so convincingly. "Seeing our boys up on the screens are like watching the big baseball/football games in the USA/England. We really reach! The electronic scoreboard and shot clocks are like no other that we Trinis have seen before. It's a fantastic experience for them. They are very blessed to have these opportunities."

The Trinidad and Tobago National male Under-17 water polo team continue to give a good account of themselves at the CONSANAT South American Water Polo Championships at the Horacio Martínez Aquatic Complex in Copacabana, Colombia.

The Polo Warriors defeated Argentina 12-11 yesterday. Leading the goal charge for T&T were Ryan West who netted four goals. West was ably assisted by his captain Daniel Tardieu and Jonathan Gillette who both scored three apiece. Russell Ferreira scored one goal. Both Gillette and Ferreira are tied with 16 goals each as T&T's top scorers.

Last evening they were waiting with bated breath for the clash between Peru and Argentina to determine if they progress to the semi-finals.

This evening will be T&T's first rest session as they are the only team to finish their allotment of six matches.

Brazil are through to the semis and have a maximum 10 points from five games with a game in hand.

Both Uruguay and Argentina are out as they are at the bottom of the table with zero and two points respectively.

Both Colombia and Venezuela have six points each, and they both have games against Uruguay today so therefore it is assumed that they would both be victorious giving them at least eight points.

T&T have registered three wins and three losses and attained six points. This leaves Peru and T&T battling for fourth place.

Brazil thrashed the Peruvians yesterday morning 24-2. Peru have four points with one game in hand versus the Argentines. T&T will be hoping for an Argentine win as if Peru are successful both they and T&T would be on six points. And based on the fact that they beat T&T, the Peruvians would advance.

In T&T's 7-6 victory versus Colombia on Thursday, Shaquille Mitchell top scored with three goals, with Gillette chipping in with two. West and Ferreira each scored one item.

Venezuela defeated T&T Thursday night 12-5. West top scored with three goals, with Ferreira and Gillette scoring one apiece.

The Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 male water polo team will be leaving Colombia on a winning note as they defeated Argentina yesterday in the fifth place playoff at the CONSANAT South American Water Polo Championships at the Horacio Martínez Aquatic Complex in Copacabana, Colombia.

T&T were led by Jonathan Gillette with six goals in their 13-8 victory over the Argentines.

Gillette, also preparing for the CARIFTA Swimming Championships, was the leading goal-scorer for T&T with 22 goals. He was supported by Russell Ferreira, who scored three goals in the match and 19 in total.

The other scorers in the game were Marc Stauble (2), Ryan West (1) and captain Daniel Tardieu (1).

Trinidad and Tobago leave the competition with some stripes on their shoulders as to date they were the only team to defeat hosts Colombia.

T&T miss out on CONSANAT Under-17 semis

Trinidad and Tobago's dreams of reaching the semi-finals at the inaugural CONSANAT South American Under-17 Water Polo Championships, at the Horacio Martínez Aquatic Complex in Copacabana, Colombia, were dashed on Friday night when Peru defeated Argentina 8-5.

Peru were in a must-win situation, going into the match, as they had four points from two victories--against T&T and Uruguay.

The Trinidad and Tobago boys had already completed their six-match preliminary round schedule with six points from three wins–against hosts Colombia, Argentina and Uruguay.

With their victory over Argentina, Peru moved alongside T&T, on six, but advanced to the semis on the head-to-head rule, thanks to Wednesday's 9-7 triumph over the Polo Warriors.

Trinidad and Tobago played Argentina yesterday in the fifth place playoff.

Team manager Peter Gillette was pleased with T&T's effort in the preliminary round.

"There appeared to be no nervousness or self doubts. I think this kind of confidence, properly channelled and coached, will produce an unstoppable team at Pan Am Juniors in August. There does not appear to be huge disappointment because they know that the result was of their own making. They have learned a great life lesson and are that much better prepared for the rest of the season.

"They all appear to be more motivated," Gillette continued, "to train harder and listen to their coach more. Discipline is always a challenge with our Trini culture. The regimented, disciplined approach of the Brazilian team was an eye-opener for the boys. Their coach did not need to tell them what they had to do in warm up. They just went about it with vigour and aggression. Clearly this is reflected in the Brazilian results."

Gillette also spoke highly of the hosts, commending them for their hospitality and administrative efficiency.

"Even in defeat, the parents of the Colombian team came over to enthusiastically congratulate us. We were clearly a popular underdog as we were congratulated wherever we went.

"The professionalism and organisational thoroughness of the tournament was exceptional. The accommodations and food have been of the highest standard and transportation has been comfortable and timely."

The T&T team will return home at 4.13 tomorrow afternoon.
