Integrated analysis of various risk factors

GIS - Geographical Information systems can be used to analyse various risk factors in relation to water and DRR

Swedish actors are involved in developing these systems. The Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI) has developed a Geotechnical theme portal (with a number of GIS tools) which serves to disseminate data and make data collection easier for users. The Swedish Defence college works with many international partners to develop GIS analysis.

One interesting question the participants were asking was whether we should put more effort into collecting information engaging internationally, to avoid too much paralel efforts?

Presentations by:

Charlotte Cederbom, PhD is Head of Department for the Dept. of Land Use planning and climate adaptation at the Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI). She presented their way of working with climate adaptation and landslide risk mapping. She also presented their GIS tools for information and knowledge sharing, followed by implementation of research results on decision support tools.

Her presentation can be found below and here

Åke Sivertun, PhD, from The Swedish Defence College gave examples from GIS implementations from e.g. Bangladesh, Costa Rica, Sweden and Italy on among other things modelling of systemic vulnerability in urbanized areas exposed to combined risk of landslide and flood. He presented also the implementation of GIS for identification of risks and vulnerabilities, prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.

His presentation can be found here.
