FAFSA

The FAFSA isa federal application and it is NOT recommend that undocumented students fill it out out electronically because as it requires you to provide a Social Security Number. It's possible that if you submit a false one they will determine that it belongs to someone else and ICE can (and has) open up investigations in response to this. However if you live in Washington you may be eligible to file the WASFA. See below.

Students who are US citizens, but come from mixed status families however, ARE eligible and encouraged to apply for the FAFSA. For students whose parents / guardians are undocumented, each school has a different process. It is best to have someone you trust check with each school to see what their process is; in some cases, they will have parents mail in the signed parent consent.

WASFA

The free Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) is a form that low-income non-citizen students can fill out online to apply for financial aid from the state. To read more, visit their website at http://www.readysetgrad.org/wasfa

FAFSA Forcaster

An alternative to the FAFSA is the FAFSA Forecaster, which can be used to determine the need of students who cannot apply for federal financial aid. Unfortunately public schools don't always use this information to process need-based aid through their financial aid offices (they use the FAFSA to determine need since most of their funding comes from focus on federal aid), but community organizations can use this to help determine what a student's financial need is. Here is the link to the forecaster

Some organizations may have you fill out a paper version of the FAFSA and will have you submit a hard copy only to them - without the SSN.

You can also apply for on-campus private / merit-based scholarships (which take into account how well you do in school as opposed to how much need you have). These types of scholarships, are sometimes offered through a separate office, so be sure to find out how it works at your school.
