NekroTIK router server.

NetRoTiK

Behold my prototype

This was after speaking to a co-worker about how nice it is to have a router combined with a terminal

Creating a light and small machine that can be easily managed at all times.

Router Board specs:

400MHz mips CPU

32MB RAM

128MB nand Flash

3 Ethernet ports

1 Serial port

1 CF Card slot

2 Mini WiFi slots

Netbook specs:

1.66GHz Intel Atom CPU

2GB DDR RAM @ 677MHz

Ethernet port

WiFi card @ +-5GHz B/G/N

IntelGMA950 @ 400MHz with 256MB dedicated memory

11.1, Led lit, lcd display.

1X VGA

This is a router built from the guts of a broken Acer atom netbook chipset and a MikroTiK RouterBoard RB500

Both can run on 12V so it seems like a good plan even for battery operation.

Commands are issued via a network monitoring program and a ssh terminal to the RB500

The netbook monitors the network state and conditions and applies rule sets via ssh triggering internal scripts.

The RB500 is a Ethernet board that runs RouterOS.

You can see the router can also

RouterOS is a exceptional networking tool, capable of many powerful tricks.

Basic examples are

-Routing

-Throttling

-Prioritizing

-Proxy

-Firewall

-Scripting

and much much more.

It also has a program called winbox that allows direct administration remotely or when you are standing right next to it.

The 11.1' screen helps allot.

This allows me to limit speeds to certain users using my network and forces them thru security.

Also allows me more control to disable access to certain services, ports, shares, addresses... this can also be done with accounts using pppoe.

On top of that I can set burst limits for certain periods of the day

Giving me massive control!!

Allowing users to have the full network bandwidth when I am off of my pc.

And limiting them when I fire up my PC to allow me speedy access to all data.

it's a blessing.
