If starting from Reuti might be worth taking the cable car down to save over 2km and 400+ meters decent to Meiringen.
It involves a fair amount of climbing (almost 1400m), but it is gradual and not tricky. If you want to shorten this, you can easily take a bus from Meiringen as far as you like before starting the walk. You could also do some of this climbing on the previous day, as that was relatively short, and overnight somewhere along the way instead of Meiringen.

We stayed at the Grindelwald Naturfreundehaus, located above the town on a terrace. When we arrived hot and sweaty, the proprietress promptly gave us each a glass of iced tea (no charge). We greatly enjoyed our stay here. The place was very welcoming, quiet and rustic, with a great deal of style. Facilities were excellent, including washer/drier and internet. Our dinner was quite a gourmet delight. Breakfast was a very impressive buffet involving a long line of huge bowls of cereals, grains and yogurts, as well as large plates of cheeses, meats and breads. I spent the afternoon lounging on the lawn and writing postcards, listening to cowbells nearby.
Another lesson learned: don’t write off a town just because it has a touristy reputation. The outskirts, and even portions of the town itself, can still deliver a high quality experience for the hiker.

From the Grosse Scheidegg you can also easily reach the Mountain Panorama Trail to the ridge (2167 m) walk. Here you can enjoy a top prospect. From First to Grindelwald either walk down or take the cable car. Übernachtungstip for hikers with tent: Camping Glacier village! Class owner, very friendly and helpful and a very quiet, clean facility!
