Combines a 2 day walk that would have stopped in Urnerboden, we will take a bus up to Klausenpass instead and depending on weather stay on the hohenweg (high) ending up in Fluelen (see below for more detail). This departs from the normal ViaAlpina for this part, if the weather is keeping you exposed then stick with the Via where at least you can get a bus down)
Bus to Klausenpass will save approx. 1400m in climbing and take 45 minutes, currently the service starts at 9:45am so this is quite late.
Bus 'Unterschächen, Untere Balm 408' or possibly further to 'Unterschächen, Äbnet', check sbb.ch is the stop after Klausenpass stop and then take the high road or Hohenweg away from the road from there. Bus details Linthal–Klausen, Passhöhe: Reservation: tel. 058 448 06 22. http://www.wanderland.ch/en/fahrplan.cfm?tid=205
I am currently deciding to stay in Attinghausen now to be closer for the next day. I wan't sure what the accommodation was really like in Eggberge (above Flüelen) and while I had intended for this to be used as a rest day I'm now thinking Braunwald would be better for this. Also The following day I am aiming to bypass Engelberg and catch the gondolas up Jochpass to then stay in Engstlealp.
How to get down from Eggberge? There is a Seilbahnen down that can save an hour of downhill walk.
How to get then to Attinghausen? Bus Flüelen, Eggberge Talstation -> Attinghausen, Post. 16 minute trip (NFB 1, NFB 2) CHF 3.60
For staying in Attinghausen I have heard good reports of the Restaurant Krone near the lower cable car station http://www.kronehotel.ch/. CHF 85 (Online booking)
Eggberg accomodation, looks best sitting above the lake: http://www.eggberge.ch/gastro-und-unterkunft.html
Just north of Fluelen is the schwimmbad in the lake, would be a nice cool place to unwind. I think this is Fleischsee on the way in from the east
Stats (kept for now to give an idea...but I'll be Postbus'ing it up beyond Klausenpass bus 408 stopping at Unterschächen, Äbnet - originally I had the walk starting at Klausenpasshohe but looks like we can cut another chunk off)

The planned path is the same until the about the 13.5km mark on the map. The mapped route drops down but I intended to follow the updated ViaAlpina and take the "Hohenweg".
Possible to stay at Eggberg above Flüelen or at least get the rail down (12 CHF) to the lakeside town, the walk is a steep descent for about 1.5 hours.
Rather than stay at the larger Altdorf stay at Flüelen on the lake or Eggberg above. There are good reasons for the diversion - firstly the way described here follows a scenic Höhenweg along the side of the Schächental valley, rather than a busy urban road to Altdorf. Secondly, it provides views of the Vierwaldstättersee and the peaks to the West...or move on and stay at Attinghausen just near the Luftseilbahn to Brusti.
