Alt 1: Save 700m and almost 10km by catching a bus to Obererbs , takes 19 minutes from Elm, Dorf to Elm, Obererbs Höhenweg (1690m), or 11 minutes to the lower Elm, Büelstafel (1260m)(common wanderweg's from here), BUS 541, BUS 545. This is confirmed from myvialpina.org: "take the bus to Skihütte Ober Erbs, a hut located high on a shelf above Elm and the valley. At Hotel Elmer the night before, our hosts had given us a “tourist card” that entitled us to free bus rides in the area. The bus ride was quite an experience, winding up numerous hairpin turns. According to guidebooks, Via Alpina hikers often take this bus to Ober Erbs and make their start up the trail to Richetlipass from there. This eliminates about 6.5 miles of walking and 2,100 feet of elevation gain."
Alt 2: Or to save just some of that, about 3km and 450m elevation, is to catch the Elm SBE (Seilbahn) up to Aempächli (starts a short way along the road, runs generally every 30 mins and will save about 500m of elevation.
Staying at Braunwald which is perched above Linthal is an optional but highly recommended. You could catch the funicular up the step ascent that Braunwald is perched on. It seems that Braunwald is more geared towards tourism and so a friendlier and more accommodating place to stay.
Crossing the Richetlipass from Elm to Linthal. It's quite a long day, with a hefty climb and an even heftier descent. The going is easy-medium, apart from some steep and tricky bits on the descent, but it does make for a tiring excursion.
From Elm, the mountain trail climbs steeply westward to the Hängstboden pasture From here, continue on an even course to Erbs. The mountain trail leads past the Wichlenmatt meadow to the Richetli pass. After the short, steep descent into the Durnachtal valley, then head on the right-hand side of the valley to Linthal, the stage destination.

If staying here as a "rest" day then consider some of the day walks around Braunwald, some options outlined here and the hike to Oberblegisee (lake) looks nice and not too far if recovering.
By many reports Linthal itself does not rate so well for accommodation, but there are other good options nearby perched 600+ meters above in Braunwald the car free tourist resort.

In Linthal
Gasthaus Bergli gets the best rating in the area and is a little out from Linthal on the way for the next days walk along Klausenstrasse http://www.giorgio.ch/.
Also consider Hotel Raben on Dorfstrasse, looks ok but rates are high and no breakfast: http://www.hotelraben.ch/49/hotel

There are two grocery stores, a hiking store, a post office, an ATM and a bakery.
after crossing the Richetlipass stop at Unterstafel (Hinterdurnachtal). Night at the barn at Joachim Schindler, his wife and their employees who speak good English. 20 CHF for the night. Discover the cellar and manufacturing processes Alpine cheese. Welcome, beautiful generosity.
Sure to drop ski lodge in the upper Erbser. Very, very nice owner, great food and views to 1A. After descending from Richetlipass to get to the Alp Hinterdurnachtal (1386 m. Above sea level. M.) past where you (now) old can stay and get homemade cheese. After a nice conversation with the farmer who offered us a free coffee, we moved on towards Linthal. This is near Mattshutte on the Elm side, before you cross the pass.
