Hello readers!!!
We have been hard at work these first couple weeks. It was a culture shock to some of us but after a couple days we adjusted; now we consider those offsetting things as norms. Personally the one thing that has been the hardest for me to get over was the lack of a clothes dryer. I have to say that I have been amazed with some of the food, especially the bread. After exploring we have found some amazing places to get a quick bite and some not nice places for a good sit down dinner.
We have made a lot of progress on our project since we arrived. We now have a couple apps coming together and we have four searchable maps of Venice spanning from 1100 to present day. I have moved from making maps of Venice by century to focusing in on mapping Venice in the early 1100's from the use of historical documents. So far I have run into some difficulty translating the document I am using, Venezia Romanica by Wladimiro Dorigo, due to the face it is in Latin. below you can see the first steps of what the map will look like. Each color is a different layer that is related to what that area was at the time, fields, church property, water, streets or buildings.
This is just the first round, however as time goes on I intend to add popups that exist along with each island. These will give information on the age of the section, documents related to the section and where in the book I am using you can find the information in more detail. Obviously mapping Venice on a scale such as this will take a very long time. I hope to map a large amount of the city completely in this style. I also hope to finish one or two other maps of Venice from different time periods to help visualize the morphology. We have a lot of work ahead of us but we are excited to do it.
Arrivederci,
Eric
