A Navy man's first assigned ship is sacred, kind of like a first love.

Out of the six ships I was assigned to during my career, the Gilmore is very special to me. fresh out of Instrumentman 'A' school in 1972, and after a long strange flight to the south, I found myself carrying a heavy seabag and my guitar through the loud noise of Ingals shipyard in Pascagoula, Ms. I finally reached my first 'Navy Home", AS-16. I was scared as hell but I mustered up the courage to report on board. I was treated to the likes of fine shipmates like Jim Forsythe, (OM1 at the time) IMC Spates, (ran a pawn shop out of th Watch and Clock repair shop), MM3 Ron Mathews, and many others. After Ingalls we returned to the Paradise of Key West. Then on to LaMaddalena.

I have many pictures of AS-16, including the one just after we lost our Starboard anchor in Haiti. (It was used as a station break on Big-G-TV ,later on) Some buddies and I formed a rock band while in LaMaddalena. Probably the first American Band to tour clubs in Sardinia (yes I have pictures). We had equipment donated from the sixth fleet band. I even have live recordings from the "new" beer hall at the end of the pier! I saw Jim Forsythe's letter in here, but I did not see an email address. Jim, If youy read this, please drop me a line. I pray that you are ok.

I left the Silly Gilly on April Fools Day, 1974, and many more Navy adventures waited for me, but I have always treasured the times spent on AS-16 the most. When you enter my home, immediatly inside the entry is all of my navy Memorabilia, the FIRST ship's plaque that you will see, is just like the one pictured on this site. It is one of my most prized posessions. I am turning 46 soon, and have been retired for almost seven years. Old, grey and bald! But I hold a special place in this old seafarer's heart for the Gilmore and my shipmates! Please write!

I was aboard the Gilmore out of bootcamp in 1961-62, when I came aboard I did different things and then I got a job in the I&E office then they did away with that and I went to the personnel office, left the ship as a PNSN then went to Norfolk.

I see the names of R. Booker and D. Thomas on the list, names sound familar,

but can't put a face with the names, but I guess that is what happens after

so many years.

I ran around with a guy from Florida (Joe) and another from Ala. (Bill).

To bad they couldn't do some of the things that we were led to beleive they were going to do with her (Gilmore).

Had some good times aboard her did a lot of growing up.

Mr Brown thank you for the ships log book

Served 70-73 Key West. EN3 forward engine room. Recall ship leaving pier three times - Opps cruise to no where, Ft.Lauderdale for spring break, New Orleans to meet the wife of the ship's name sake - (Mrs. Gilmore).

I remember the ship loosing a main engine in the aft engine room on the way up the Mississippi, and having to work 24 on and 24 on until it was fixed because the ship was only making a couple of knots more than the speed of the current coming down the river!

And, I too remember the Green Parrott, as well as the 3.2 beer on the base. The news of ship's disassembly was sadding. Somewhere in my collection of photographs I have some pictures of the ship, which I can share with anyone interested.

Best to all who have served on her. It was a great time in my life.

1948-1951. My dad , Howard Coffey served on the Gilmore during 1948-51. He was on the deck crew(?),3rd division. He mentioned the names James Forrest Gardner, Chief Hunt, Wells, William Lloyd Thomas, Bruce Davis, Pappy Shields, and the 4th division. Interested in hearing from anyone who served during those years. He has a lot of great memories and loves to talk about them. He just learned that the Gilmore was sent to the scrap yard earlier this year (March 2006). He was really disappointed to hear that. If anyone has any news or info for him please e-mail me and I will pass him on the info. Thanks

This brings up so many great memories of my father, who passed away last year. He had a moving ceremony, fitting for his almost 30 years of service. I believe he was assigned to the Gilmore between 1973-1976. I recall waiting in Key West with my mom and siblings before he could send for us after he arrived in Sardenia. We lived in Visa Mare for the first year and then we moved to La Madelena. The liberty boat, getting water from the community springs and thinking that the small movie theater was the end all for a great outing - what a wonderful time!

I was stationed on the Gilmore in 1979-80. She was my first ship right out of "A" School, and enjoyed every moment I spent with her, the crew, and my "M" Division shipmates. I also had the honor of knowing Capt. Klinedinst, who had wanted me to be his aide, but my Division Officer wouldn't let me go. He was a very fine officer, and one thing I remember about him was that he had an "Open Door" policy if a crewmember wanted to see him about any issue.

La Maddalena and Palau were such great resort areas and we Americans had the privilege of working and serving our country in a area with beautiful beaches, great food, and terrific scuba diving! I remember the CO asking the crew to volunteer to fight the fires that broke out in Palau in the summer, the Italian fire truck that pulled up siren blaring and only about a gallon of water coming out of the hoses. The time I walked into the beer bar for the first time with my cover on, the bell was rung, and everybody sitting at tables running to the bar for a free drink on me!! The brawl at a bar in Toulon between our sailors and french sailors, and the leniency given to us by out XO. The Navy has changed since then; no more beards, too many hoods, and too many political officers.

I salute all you who have served on her!

My father, Raymond Arleth of Fallsington, Pa. served on the Gilmore from 1948-1950 in Key West. He recently passed away from lung cancer, but before he did, I had the opportunity to tell him about this site. I recently saw a photo with presiden Truman, and I could not beleive my eyes, when I saw my father standing at the top right hand side of the president! I wish he could have seen that photo, and I wish I knew who took it. Thank you to whomever posted the photo, as you have made my family very happy. My dad loved the Navy, and the Gilmore. I have a few photos to share, but cannot seem to figure out how to post. I would like to hear from anyone who is interested or knew of my dad. Also, if anyone has any information on boxing in the Navy in the late 40's/early 50's, I would welcome that info also. Thanks for the site!!

I joined the Gilmore in March of '56 when she was homeported in Key West. At that time she was known as "building 16" since she seldom got underway. In the fall of '56 we went to Hoboken, N.J. for a shipyard overhaul at the Bethlehem Steel shipyard. After the overhaul we went to Gitmo for REFTRA, then a port visit to Havana, and back to Key West. In '57, we went to Norfolk to replace the tender there for several months, then back to Key West. We spent 6 weeks in the Virgin Islands in '58 for Springboard '58, and again a port visit to Havana. I married a local Key West girl (a Conch) and we now live in Hobe Sound, Fla. While on the Gilmore I was in R-3 division (electrical repair) and left her in August '58 as an EM2.

I ran across a newspaper photo showing her being towed from the Ghost Fleet to be scrapped. It is a sad day for me. I have very fond memories of buddies aboard the Gilmore. I had hoped to be able to go aboard her one more time.... Hopefully, her metal will be used to build another proud ship for the U.S. Navy. USS Gilmore, rest in peace.

I was aboard the Gilmore from Nov. 57 until Aug. 59. I came on board straight from boot camp at Bainbridge, Md. I have fond memories of this time, it was the first time I was away from home for any amount of time. It was a learning time for me. I have retired from my job with the DOD and I am a little older and my memories are starting to fade, but I do remember my times aboard ship. I boarded ship in Key West and then the home port was changed to Charleston, SC in July of 59, My tour aboard the Gilmore was over in August and I returned home. We made a trip to St. Thomas in the Virgin Island, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Kingston, Jamaica and also Havanna, Cuba when all the crazy stuff was going on with Castro. I haven't been in contact with anyone from then.

Served in Gilmore from 11/62 to 03/65, came direct from Torpedoman "A" School and immediatly went to 90 days Mess Cooking. Oh, the wonders of an education. It seems most of my time aboard was a Mess Cook, Compartment Cleaner and Captain of the Head. All worthy occupations. Some time served was in the Steam Torpedo Shop, under the after Mess Decks. Torpedomen are a strange breed of human, some people questioned our inclusion in the species.

Time served was interesting and learned some hard lessons. One is not to run your mouth off to an E-9 Torpedoman, don't eat glass when your are real drunk, women don't like to see you urinate in public or eat bugs and lessons of that ilk. It was a good experience and served me well.

Had some decent liberty in New York, Philadelphia, Norfolk, Baltimore, Key West, Miami and New Orleans. Learned a lot on "The Strip" as Reynolds Avenue was called. Does anyone know what happened to Dirty Debbie, Tattoo Dotty, Cherokee or any of the other visions of lovliness may have gone? I was in Charleston 5 years ago and "The Strip" is boarded up and dry as a popcorn fart. Sad sight to see. BTW, how did we get so old? It was 41 years ago when I left the Gilmore.

If you served aboard same time as myself drop a line.

Never served on the Gilmore but did serve aboard USS ORION 1981 - 1984. Started forward engineroom then repair dept and finally QA. For those that are interested, last month (July 2006) Orion was towed to Sparrows Point, MD for disassembly. She was bought as scrap for $735,000 to North American Ship Recycling. For those interested, the yard will allow a window of opportunity for those who wish to cross her deck one last time. Feel free to contact me for info. Also, you can request a piece of the hull from the shipyard.

I served on the Gilmore appox. 17 months Jan. '51 - June '52, and worked in the Forward Engine Room. I am from Boston Ma. now living in Newport News, Va. (Retired).

I watched them, this past March, from the shore take the Gilmore down the James River, and it was a sad, and lonely sight for my eyes. All I could think of is all the good times myself, and my shipmates had aboard her, and the good times we had in Key West.

I reported aboard the Gilmore (at Charleston, S.C.)as a Shipfitter 3rd class in November of 1968, after a special tour of shore duty at Norfolk, Va. Luckily, I made 3rd class prior to boarding the Gilmore as the R-1 Division Officer had me slated to go straight to mess cooking and then compartment cleaning (but I still caught some working parties until I made SF2 in Dec. of 1969).

While I didn't realize it at the time, in retrospect, I can now see that my years serving aboard the Gilmore were some of the greatest in my life. But even then I always enjoyed going to sea and visiting new places, etc.

I was very saddened that the Gilmore was scrapped. I just wish I'd have taken some sort of souvenir from here to better remember her by; but at least I have my memories and some old photos.

Over the years I've managed to hear from/contact some of my former shipmates. I'm just so surprised that with the internet more shipmates (of all years) haven't found or looked for this website.

I served on board the Gilmore from 1977 to 1980. I was the only Illustrator Draftsman on board in charge of that department, next to the print shop. I have wonderful memories of my life on the Island of La Maddalena and also in Santa Teresa di Gallura where I lived for some time. At the end of my tour on the Gilmore I ended my enlistment, got my discharge papers, stayed in Sardinia for some months and left the Island to travel all throughout Europe and returned to the US a year later.

I was stationed aboard the Gilmore from 77 to 78. Reported as a DP3 and was promoted to DP2. Got a bad start with the div officer when I was left behind for Shore Patrol duty when she went in the yard at Naples. Had a pregnant wife Jackie that arrived just before that deployment. Everthing worked out and I continued my career, retired in 94 as a DPC. Would like to here from anyone that may remember me.

Hi All,

The Big "G" was my first Duty Station after Boot Camp as FA in the June 1, 1960. until Feburay 21, 1964. Was in the Shetmetal Shop X17, served one tour on the mess Decks where I rode out the Hurricane, name excapes me.

A real good ship and a fine crew, leared a lot on Gilmore, made SFM 2 and was transfered to the NDT Lab.(Nondestructive Test LAB.) HTCS Holbert, myself and a FN built the Shop 93A from ground zero. Attended serval NDT schools which where at various locations, went TAD to CNSY for serveral months to gain experince in the four NDT test methods.

Went thought the Overhaul that added to Nuclear Spaces on board and added the capabilties of gamma Ray, X-ray to provide the testing reguired navy standars.

Marrrid Dianne Lafe Graves on December 21, 1963 and on March 1, 1964 I was transfered to the Rock, U.S. Naval Base Gitmo Cuba, one yaer unaccompined tour.

really did not want to Go but the orders came in by name, rate and the Navy would not let a frind with the Same Rate and NEC's take the orders so there I was on the Rock for a year.

But it was not all the bad just a place I would rather not had to go at least during that time period any way. Hated to hear that the Big "G" was scraped but such is life.

I served on the Gilmore from January, 1972 through February 1975. Except for some time on the Picuda (SS382) and with squadron in Key West. Over the long July 4th weekend I was visiting my two oldest boys who are also in the Navy (we have 3 plus 2 girls) in Norfolk we made a pilgrimage to a scrapyard where the Gilmore is next in line to be cut apart and recycled. We took a few photos but they are film and not digital. I could pick out the radio shack space from the stern/port side. Brought back a lot of memories of good times in Key West, the trip to La Maddalena and visits around the Med. Would be glad to hear from other "associates" of my youthful journeys.

My husband, Oliver K. Hofmann and I were in the Norfolk area over the 4th of July holiday this year to visit two of our sons who are stationed at the Norfolk Navy Base. I had seen your news about the Gilmore being scrapped and the directions to see her. I told Oliver we had to see her one last time. We drove along US 13 until we got to the bridge where you could see the scrap yard and there she was! We pulled off the road and went to the bridge and took pictures. I never gave it any thought when we left La Maddelena in February 1995 that we would see her again and tears welled up in my eyes when I did. Oliver was stationed aboard her as a Radioman when she sailed over to Santo Stefano. I, being 5 months pregnant with out first child, followed in July of that year (1993). If I hadn't I would never have seen Rome, Genoa, or Paris and I would have been in the states alone to have our daughter. I was sent to Naples to the base hospital 2 weeks before my due date and waited 5 weeks before I finally went into labor. Life on the economy in La Maddelena was certainly an adverture but one I wouldln't trade for anything. Thank you so much for all the time you have put in on this website. I check back periodically to see what's new. Keep up the good work!

It was very disappointing to learn of the fate of the USS Gilmore.I was a machinery repairman on the USS Bushnell at Key West from March 1955 till May 1957. I was very upset when I found out the Bushnell was towed out to sea and sunk by two torpedoes. I Attended the Bushnell reunion at Mobile Ala.in 2004 and was told of plans of the restoration of the Orion and the Gilmore.I thought some day I could go aboard one or the other and bring back some good memories. It is very disappointing that Ward Brewers plan did not work out.

I reported to the Gilmore in November of 1965 as a seventeen year old seaman apprentice fresh out of boot camp. Essentially, it was a stopover for me as I was waiting to attend CT school in Pensacola, Florida. The first few days aboard it I was overwhelmed by shipboard life but slowly became acclimated to this brand new way of living. I met many characters and had a lot of fun for those short eight months. I did more growing up in that time period than any other in my life. My most vivid recollection was a six week cruise to the Carribean, not so much for the destination but for the exhiliration of being out to sea, especially at night when I would sit up on the forecastle taking in the wondrous moonlit seascape, the sound of the ship cutting through the water and the intoxicating smell of the ocean. The Gilmore was more than just a ship, it was an awakening for me for which I will always be thankful. Rest in peace my silent friend, you did your job......

My Dad, Andrew T. Kozak from Utica,NY sailed on the Gilmore in the late 40's and early 50's. He was in Key West, Cuba, Boston. He talked of a hurricane in the North Atlantic when they took solid water over the bridge. He was on the bridge waiting to go up in the crow's nest. It was too rough though, too bad for the guy that had to ride it out up there.

I've tried to track her for a couple of years now. I thought she was bound for an Englich scrapyard.

We keep her alive with our memory and hold her and her crew aloft for as long as we can remember.

Wow I was just thinking about the navy, when I decided to see what was on the net about the gilly. I reportd to duty on the gilmore right after boot camp from orlando I arrived in oct 1977. I was no more than a skinny kid. I stayed in trouble mostly but I still have very fond memories. from Italy. Lord at the partying we did on that ship. I don,t really remember many names but I do remember a guy named joe bocklemann from chicago. Joe if you ever read this look me up.

I grew up on that ship. I did galley duty where I then was a coxian on the u-boats (shuttle craft I think we called them. What fun we had there . the I became a machinery repairemann (machinist) which I still do today except I am now a tool & die maker and doin very well. I remember cheif weebie( remember weebie wobbles but he don,t fall down. and his short side kick maldanodo the tough cop. and the alabama kid who always dressed up in a kkk outfit and smitty fron the shop. I ended up getting out of the navy but I will never forget my hay days on the HW Gilmore any one remember me please feel free to contact me. If any one remembers Randall Rabb from Gastonia NC If you do he passed away shortly after getting out of the navy from cancer he was a super guy and the 1st person I met when I arrived. what a bad nite that was. anyway I am sad the gilly looks older than me, but we all leave this earth someway.. god bless all who served and and all who lost their lives so we could have the freedom we have now.. not to mention all those good memories

I reported to the Gilmore in August, 1949 as a seaman apprentice. Was discharged off her in November, 1952 as an RM2. Many happy memories and am very sorry to learn of her last sail. We had many good times in those days. It was still possible to sail to Cuba and Key West ships did so almost weekly. Those of us in the radio gang got first notice of space available and took advantage of it to make several trips to Cuba. Batista was still in power and the island nation was festive and welcoming - exchange rate was good too!I have several black and white photos of the ship during that period but am am not facile enough on the computer to be able to scan them in and send on. Will try to get a friend to do that for me - I accessed this site once before and saw that pictures from that era are missing. Had planned to make the reunion in Savannah this year but my wife is ill and I couldn't make it. Hopefully I'll still be around for the next one!

After working hard decommissioning the U.S.S. Bushnell, the U.S.S. Howard W. Gilmore came to Key West, and took the burning bush's place, I served the remainder of my tour on the Gilmore, that was from 1970 until July 1971. There wasn't much to Key West, then, I hear it's really grown up. Both the Bushnell, and the Gilmore were good old ships, with great crews, I'm proud I was part of both. I was in the carpenter shop on both ships, and my brother Gordon, was with me on the Bushnell, we lost him to cancer in 2002, after our service in the Nav, my brother and I were in the National Guard (Airborne Rangers 1st.Det.Company G, 143rd.Inf.) in Austin, Texas. Later I was back in the Nav, the Reserves as a MAA 1st. class. (13years total service) I retired from the Austin Police Department, as a Detective. Not that I have forgotten, but after so many years I felt the urge to search for the AS-16 in the Internet. I thank Brown and the others who have worked on this project.

I served as the Diver-Hospital Corpsman from late 1975 to July 1977. Great memories of La Maddalena, the area, and of course, the shipmates in both the diving locker and sickbay. I could tell many stories all of which I have kept in detail in a logbook for these many years. One of these days I will get the courage to do something with them. I can relate or remember many of the stories/comments posted in the ships log books: the "red square" and the demonstrations, the brush fires in St. Stefano, the oil spills, the falling of the crane into the water, the dry dock (Napoles), the tangling of the anchor chains in Barcelona, touring Mount Edna while in Sicily, the change of command, not counting the specific stories from sickbay and the diving locker.

I am looking forward to hear from shipmates. Feel free to contact me, you may want to know what is in my books about you...

Hi whomever:

I served on the Gilmore in 1956. She was docked at Key West at the time. I was part of a group of men who were drafted in Nov. 1955.( I hope you won't hodd it against me that I was a draftee) I made Third Class before leaving the ship to be reassigned to the Fleet Sonar School. I was in the O Division working as a Yeoman. Our Div. officer was Lt. Cordray and his assistant was a Lt. JG Eichler. (We called him Miss Eichler) He gave me extra duty one time for something that was not my fault and I haven't forgiven him yet.

I played on the ship's baseball, softball, and basketball teams. The ship's Captain was Capt. Austin who was a great Captain. He was a softball fan and came to almost all of our games, played at City Park in Key West. Chief Cates and Chief James led the O Div then. Pete Lemle and David Dingle were very savvy guys in the workings of the O Div. Gerry Young, Andy Blanier, Aviles, Maddox and Chief Blaney were also in the Div. (Electronics section)

I discovered this site this AM and know nothing about it. I would like to hear from some of the Gilmore sailors, especially some that I have mentioned. I will name some of the athletes that were teammates. Ed Curry, Dan Barlow, John Gardner (The greatest softball pitcher I have ever seen. Sublalt would send for him at tournament times) Wackmonski, Benson, and Grampe. Torpedoeman Baham (misspelled) was the softball team coach. Torpedoeman Red Austin was the coavh of the baseball team.

Please bring me up to date.

I was on board 79-80 and cross decked to Orion.

I just went to the scrap yard.

In talking to the engineers taking her apart, I told them some stoies. One, about the tug hitting the port side forward of midships, flooding a storeroom. I said the fix was to weld the hatch shut (then). They laugh, said they had just found it yesterday and it's still flooded. Then the story of the XO. And, I asked if they knew how how she got her name, they didn't so I told them.

I believe the Gilmore made notority in the magizine "High Times" as the head of the med. Had a blast on the ship and orion. Met some great people and some rats (I still swear) I would cap in the knee if I ever saw them again.

My the way the scrap metal is going to China. Sad, but true.

I was in the outside machine div (R-2)

I spent eighteen months on the Rock "Lamad " and " Silly Gilly " from 76 into early 77 as a Diver. I didn't spend much time on the boat as we Deep Sea Divers had our own shack on the end of the pier. That was well worth while as we didn't have to deal with the multi stacked racks in the berthing quarters. And as always we didn't have easy life of the rest of the sailors had ... we had it better. We always trading those lousey PYREX coffe cups the Bubbleheads threw over the side for a case of fresh cornish game hens or steak that wasn't freezer burnt. I enjoyed my time in Italy and have kept in contact with several of the people I worked with. Great site ... it's enjoyable to read about other stories and sailors memories.

I served on the Gilmore from 1954 to 1958. I remember those day's with great memories and the people I worked with in The IC Shop. After the three years of work and education I made E6 as an Interior Communications Technician in three years and left to go on to college surviving because of the work ethic I acquired on the Gilmore. I became a professional student with a MS Degree and some post graduate work in Computer Sciences that helped me in my 40 years in the telecommunications industry. I remember the telephone system, the ICM system and the need to rewire those the 24 cylinder diesel engines about every six months. I retired in 1995. I plan on attending the reunion in May 2006.

I served aboard 7 ships during my 25 year Navy career (1959-85) and the "Happy Howard" was my first (1960-63) grey lady. All of my other ships have long since gone to the scrap yard. The Gilmore was the oldest but she also lasted the longest. That even includes a ship I put in commission in 1967 when the Gilmore was already pushing 30 years old. That says a lot for her usefulness and performance while serving the fleet. I was sorry to learn she will finally become scrap.

I joined her crew right after I completed FT "A" and "C" schools at Great Lakes NTC and was assigned to the Fire Control repair shop as the first FTSN to come aboard in 2 years. At last, somebody to clean up. I still remember the names of all the great Navy men that I served with in the FT shop and a lot more from the boats we worked on.

Actually, these were some of the best years I spent in the Navy. The people I worked for and with were all outstanding. I have nothing but fond memories of them all. Since over 40 years have passed since I last served aboard her, I fear many may no longer be with us. Many were vets of WWII and would be well into their 80's and even 90's by now.

To all who served aboard her, I salute you. May you always have fair winds and following seas in your lives. I will not be able to make the upcoming reunion in May 06, but you will be in my thoughts. I will do the best I can to make the next one.

I was aboard the Gilmore when it left Charleston headed for Italy. We took along family members and all kinds of cars and heavy equipment. The Seabees went along to build the new base on San Stephano island. I had an apartment in La Maddelena in a place called the Flathouse. We had to take liberty boats everyday, to and from the ship. I was a Data Processing Technician. I left La Maddelena in 1973 headed to the Uss Sierra in Charleston.

Hi,I was a fireman HT when I arrived on the Rock in about august of 1977.I was fresh out of boot and just turned 17 that passed april.

Man did I have a bad start. The airlines lost my seabag, So here I was a rookie and no uniforms. And you now what the Comasary had to offer. That and it seemed I was always getting transfered to someone who couldn't believe my story. If any of you were aboard the ship in the mounth of Nov 1977. 5th, It was I that was crushed in the cargo Elevator.

God was really with me that day, And he worked through some good doctors and It seems I remeber a 2nd claas petty officer VietNam corpseman that was very instrumental in saaving me. I can't remeber his name, But if you read this pease let me here from you.

For awile I blamed my fellow seaman on what happened to me, But It was just a trajic accident that I live with the physical and mental pain with every day.

Sorry to sound down .... I had a lot of good times aboard the ship and in Napoli also. Write me back I am going to try and be at the reunuion.

I was an elctrician's mate aboard the U.S.S. Howard W. Gilmore AS 16. She was a good ship and all aboard did what we could and needed to do for all the Submariners who were lucky enough to be along side her. Everyone aboard this ship worked his utmost for our skipper.

We were out of Norfolk, VA. but stationed of the coast of Italy at the East Side of Sardinia. Worked on many a submarine Nuclear to the Old Diesle Engine Subs.

Top notch crew and submariners were dedicated. Had long stays downunder and never got to see the sun for days on end.

I had a few trial runs with the submarines while on duty just in case trouble occured while at sea to have an extra hand around any trouble or problems.

I was hurt in the service while working on the U.S.S. Howard W. Gilomore pulling the shore power cables for the subs that were comong in for repairs. This happened in 1976 September. I was paralized for quite awhile befors I finally was able to get the feeling back in my legs "Thank you Dr. Bissonette you were a God Send for me, Thnk you Jesus and I was discharged under Honorably conditions December 1977. Even now times I remember those times and my crewmates, Executive Officer and C.O. coming by to keep me company and telling me all will be okay.

My wife Kathleen and I have Four Children all grown now and Nine Grandchildren.

Thank God and the United States of America. God Bless and Keep Us All!

Sincerly,

Nuclear Electrician's Mate: Larry T. Yonts

I guess there is not room on the planet to save all the ships that have served this great country over the years. After all, she was "only" an auxiliary ship. She was, and is, a big part of my life.

Fair winds and following seas to her, and all the people who served aboard her, during her many years of loyal service in defense of this country.

The scrap heap along Military Highway... what a sad end for a proud ship!! I would have rather seen her blown apart to test a new weapon or even sunk to become a refuge for marine life... Hopefully someone saved the aft engine room workbench engraved and stamped with the names of hundreds of Gilmore Snipes (it was still there in 1992)!! I served aboard Gilmore from Oct. 78 - Sept. 80 as a MM2 then MM1 in the "M&A" Division. Worked mostly in the O2N2 plant. Stood fireroom watches, CMO shore patrol and liberty boat shore patrol (yuck...). My son was baptised in the ship's chapel/library in April 1980, possibly the last baptism onboard? Lots of memories, good and bad!

I am sad to say today that the USS Howard W. Gilmore (AS-16) will be making her last cruise. Earlier this week it is reported that the our beloved ship will be taken out of the "Ghost Fleet" in the James River and moved to a local shipyard where she will be dismantled because of environmental reasons.

Great to see this site! I served aboard in 78'-79'as a MMFN down in the Fireroom! Those were some crazy times in LaMadd!! Want to hear from my shipmates! What ever happened to Wilt, Schnell, Wetherington, Simms, Drifty Mike, Paul(Conehead), Plant, Margo, Foster, The Oil Kings, All the boys in O2N2 (where I used to hide out!) And Ostrander-THE BIG "O"!!? C'mon guys, and all the rest not named here, let me know how life's going for you. Favorite memories are drawing pictures of my shipmates in the log Book on mid watch (man, we got some stuff going on there!) Got yelled at a bit by the BRASS about these OFFICIAL NAVY RECORDS being MONKEYED with, but I caught them a couple of times laughing at all the pictures and captions that we got started when they were up in the Logroom !!Too Funny!!! Also I remember chugging beer in the club on the pier. Anybody remember who dropped that nickel in my beer, and then watched me down it in one swig? I DID NOT know that coin was in there!! I just remember the looks on their faces after I drank it!! From that moment on and to this very day, I STILL check my beer before I swallow!!! What times-What Guys!! I will never forget any of you! You are the best!! I hope you have had as good a life as I have had so far, with many more great times ahead! God Bless!!!

I've been in touch with Chief Lee Greer. Still looking for Larry Simmit, Stu Huffman, Rick Huckaby, David Meyre(sp?), Ken Barnet, et,al. and a special note to anyone who knows Hull Tech Joe Moon. Have him get in touch with me Please! I still remember When Cmndr Ralph got shot with bird shot by a local, while we where on an R n R trip. A corpman had him patched up by the time we got back. He still looked rather the worse for wear, for a while. My wife and I enjoyed the summers and hated the winters there. Does any one remember when the Sea Bees used a local Italian contracter to blow-up a large boulder that was in the way. I personally think they used a little to much Dynamite. Even at what we were told was a safe distance to watch, there were fist sized rocks raining down all around us. As I recall no one got hurt though. It was rarely dull. As divers we had a game where we try and catch another diver off gaurd and push them over the side with the least amount of pressure or shove as possible and still get them to fall in. It was a game of stealth, finesse and constant revenge.

Came on board Jan-Feb '77 straight from Orlando boot as a SN. Lt. Hayball, navigator, rescued me from the mess crank detail, making me an offer I could not refuse - Quartermaster SN or mess duty! CPO QM Weldon was walking boss. My beach buddy was RM Marney Defore from Texas - yo, where are you now? SM Mark Bodner from upstate NY was also a running buddy. Anyone remember when the USS Nautilus (first nuke sub for those who don't remember)tied up - wooden decking and all- we were told no pictures are to be taken - sneaked one anyway from porthole in pilothouse. Saw picture of wheelhouse on this site - sad. It was a beautiful antique. All the admirals, et. cetera all had to come up and look at it. The thick armour plating, armoured port covers, voice tubes, all the brass fitings, fixtures and huge brass wheel, with wood rim, it had style! I spent many hours cleaning & polishing it. My bething compartment was with radiomen, signalmen and ET's - directly under the pipefitting shop!! Absolutely no late sleep-ins on Sat. those guys never quit working. In summer of '80? I saw "holy smokes! there's the Gilmore" in Norfolk Naval Yard from the bridge of my last ship FF1090 Ainsworth coming back from Persian Gulf tour (Iran Hostage Crisis), I later went on board - everything was still the same but older and more worn. Found out she had been replaced and would be mothballed. She did her duty and she was getting old and tired. Time to rest.

What a pleasure and a treasure to read the many memory's of some of best who served on a ship will always be an important part of my life. I just read an entry from a former friend and HT shipmate Patrick (Jonesy) Jones. We were in the Pipeshop together. Served under Chief Darrell Holt who made CWO before leaving "The Rock". Shady Taylor, Fred Seanna, HT3 Severs, Bill Baker from upstate New York, TM Mark Vines , Robert Gilliam, Vinnie Sacco, 1st Class MS Rueben, and many who's names slip my mind at the moment. I was on the H.W. Gilmore from November 1976 to August 1978.

My time on the Gilmore was and is memorable to me. Alot of good people and alot of great times! I was running a P250 pump when the Commisary burned. I'd like to hear from anyone I served with. God Bless each of us, our current military, and the USA!

Served on board 1950-1952 as FC3 . Primary duty was Maintaing the MK 37 gun director electronic equipment. Secondary duty was running the submarine "attack teacher" down in the bowels of the ship. I remember the day the 40MM guns were blazing and the cut-out cam malfunctioned and we almost hit the ships suprstructure. I also remember the day we had set the sensitivity of the MK37 gun director radar "too tight" and we almost hit the aircraft that was towing a target sleeve. They sent the message back; "please note, we are towing the target, NOT pushing it" and with that they cut the sleeve and ran. I remember too being the "target ship" for submarine torpedo exercises. It was fun to watch the torpedo wakes as they passed "UNDER" the ship!!

Ahoy!

Served on the Gilmore 12/73 to 9/76 on the inventory team, supply support center, SP in Palau, and the T-shed. Lived in Santa Teresa di Gallura on Via Tevere. That has to have been my best duty station ever.

I went to Tacoma, WA on a job and had to interview a guy for a job working with the Taiwan navy. Chris Perea...we were on the Gilmore together. Went into the base barber shop at NAS Oceana a few years ago and there was Ben Ocampo, also stationed with him on the Gilmore! My son joined the navy and his first ship's CMC (SKCM) was on the Gilmore with us, but I can't remember his name now (son joined in '91, also as an SK).

I was on leave in '79 from the USS Lasalle ARG-4 and took a trip to Sardinia. Just like going home.

I retired from the Navy in '85 and am now a gov't contractor working with foreign navies (when one of our ships is deommissioned, a foreign navy might buy it ....Taiwan just bought the KIDD, SCOTT, CHANDLER and CALAHAN and are working a 4 year project in Charleston, SC at Detyens SY) and our team does all the logistics for the turn overs. I've been doing this since 1993 and have really enjoyed it.

So thus is what we've come to, we have/had a chance to 'cross the brow...'

OLD SAILORS

OLD SAILORS SIT AND CHEW THE FAT

ABOUT THINGS THAT USED TO BE,

OF THE THINGS THEY'VE SEEN,

THE PLACES THEY'VE BEEN,

WHEN THEY VENTURED OUT TO SEA.

THEY REMEMBERED FRIENDS FROM LONG AGO,

THE TIMES THEY HAD BACK THEN.

THE MONEY THEY SPENT,

THE BEER THEY DRANK,

IN THEIR DAYS AS SAILING MEN.

THEIR LIVES ARE LIVED IN DAYS GONE BY,

WITH THOUGHTS THAT FOREVER LAST.

OF BELL BOTTOM BLUES,

WINGED WHITE HATS,

AND GOOD TIMES IN THEIR PAST.

THEY RECALL LONG NIGHTS WITH A MOON SO BRIGHT

FAR OUT ON A LONELY SEA.

THE THOUGHTS THEY HAD

AS YOUTHFUL LADS,

WHEN THEIR LIVES WERE WILD AND FREE.

THEY KNEW SO WELL HOW THEIR HEARTS WOULD SWELL

WHEN OLD GLORY FLUTTERED PROUD AND FREE.

THE UNDERWAY PENNANT

SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT

AS THEY PLOWED THROUGH AN ANGRY SEA.

THEY TALKED OF THE CHOW OL' COOKIE WOULD MAKE

AND THE SHRILL OF THE BOSUN'S PIPE.

HOW SALT SPRAY WOULD FALL

LIKE SPARKS FROM HELL

WHEN A STORM STRUCK IN THE NIGHT.

THEY REMEMBER OLD SHIPMATES ALREADY GONE

WHO FOREVER HOLD A SPOT IN THEIR HEART,

WHEN SAILORS WERE BOLD,

AND FRIENDSHIPS WOULD HOLD,

UNTIL DEATH RIPPED THEM APART.

THEIR SAILING DAYS ARE GONE AWAY,

NEVER AGAIN WILL THEY CROSS THE BROW.

THEY HAVE NO REGRETS,

THEY KNOW THEY ARE BLESSED,

FOR HONORING A SACRED VOW.

THEIR NUMBERS GROW LESS WITH EACH PASSING DAY

AS THE FINAL MUSTER BEGINS,

THERE'S NOTHING TO LOSE,

ALL HAVE PAID DUES,

AND THEY'LL SAIL WITH SHIPMATES AGAIN.

I'VE HEARD THEM SAY BEFORE GETTING UNDERWAY

THAT THERE'S STILL SOME SAILING TO DO,

THEY'LL SAY WITH A GRIN

THAT THEIR SHIP HAS COME IN

AND THE LORD IS COMMANDING THE CREW.

(74-76) Oh and how could I forget the divers. Went from nothing to Advanced Open Water with them. The dive trips and when we opened our own dive club house in Palau with our own compressor. Got tired of he oily air we got from the locals. Never forget the time one of our members shot an electric stingray with his new spear gun. How about our group Advanced Open Water test, raising the concrete mooring with laundry bags full of air and almost dragging one of the instructors and his raft to the bottom. Great Fun!!

Hey any Gilmore Flyer's still around. Contact me. I just found the old club patch. Some of you may remember me. I provided a number of topless photos for the onboard TV system. I also was a QC Supervisor and developed the QA Inspector training class in 1974.

I also provided many B&W family portraits for shipmates between 1973 and 1976. I have a lot of fond memories. The James Bond movie with Guido standing on the pier and Bond driving through our village of Santa Teresa also bring back a few.

seems the late 50's early 60's nobody is home. started as a deck ape then Dr. Farrell got me transferred to the dental clinic and then shipped to san diego and dental tech school. I remember - Santos who maintained the capt's gig. great guy! george allen, chico, and a whole lot of faces without names. most will come to me after i end this. I too would like to walk the decks again. why not have a sign up sheet for shipmates to sign and then forward to each congressmen etc. Seems easier than asking for individual e-mails which might be ignored by a staff member.

While in key west i hung around with the daughter of the woman who owned "the cave" they were Cubans and really nice. must go now my best to all.

Okay Fellas,

This is what we need to do. I have just finished writing senator Mr. John Mccain of Arizona for help in saving the Gilmore. We are running out of time. She is due to be sank in March of this year.

Everyone who reads this should look through the ships log book, find 2 people... "anyone" with an e-mail adress (Even if you don't know them), tell them to type in "Contact Senator" in their search engine, Find John Mccain's site, write to him and plead to his sense of patriotism and love of his fellow veterans, and ask him to help save the Gilmore.

I for one want to shake hands with all of you shipmetes someday with my grandchildren standing beside me on the quarterdeck of this grand lady.

It has been nearly 4 years since I last signed in. Since then I have become a grandfather, twice over, and moved to south Florida. Damn, I've become an old man. In my heart, I'm still the 17 year old kid who reported to the Gilmore straight from boot camp. I still talk to my much older buddy, Cyril... you know who I am talking about, from those early days on the Gilmore. We were the only E-nothings assigned to Commander Submarine Refit and Training Group in those days. It only made sense that we became close friends. Here we are, 27 years later, and we are still buddies. That only happens in the service, my friends. Appreciate the friends you made on the the Gilmore, and look after them at this later point in our lives. Let's try and get some of us younger shipmate to show up at the next reunion. Keith

I was stationed onboard from '78-'80 in "Deck div. and there was a plaque in our berthing compartment right next to my rack with a poem engraved on it. I don't know who wrote it, but I have remembered it after all these years from seeing it so many times. It goes like this....

We're stationed aboard the "Gilmore", Santo Stefano is "The Rock",

where we're doomed to waste our lives, on a ship that God forgot.

We're in the Navy people, we earn our measly pay,

defending our country's trillions, for a couple of bucks a day.

We burn we sweat we blister, It's more than a man can stand,

We're not supposed to be prisoners, but warriors of our great land.

But someday there'll be no Gilmore, There'll be no pearly shores,

There'll be no four section duty, There'll be no Spanish whores.

The Pearly gates will open wide, we'll hear St. Peter yell.....

FALL IN GOOD MEN FROM "HWG", YOU'VE SERVED YOUR TIME IN HELL !!

At the time, this poem seemed fitting (being so far from home and all). But now looking back, It was without a doubt the best times...and friendships that God has ever blessed me with. All of you...("My Brothers") are in my heart..Forever.
