Served in the DC division office under LT jg EJ Guntrum, from 59-61 Marv Clenney was the Chief. Other names I remember are Pless, Sutphin, Trainum, Tilley, Oates, Kauffman, Speedy (nickmane), Cobb. Would like to hear from anyone in that time frame. I do have some pictures that are in black and white. I worked on some of the ship alts before retrofit. Glad I found the Web Site.

I served on the Gilmore from 3/56 to 8/58 in R-3 division as EMFN,EM3,EM2. We were homeported in Key West, overhauled in Hoboken, N.J. fall of '56, then to Gitmo for REFTRA, then Havana for liberty. We did Springboard '58 in St. Thomas, V.I. at the pier for 6 weeks, then Havana again. Married a Conch in '58, and we go to Key West frequently. Not the same place as it was in the '50's, but we go to the old Naval Station for sunsets. Like to hear from shipmates.

Hi all. My name is James (Jim) Preston I was an EN on board from 10/76-11/77. I worked in the Oil King shop. I was the duty Oil King the night the mess decks got flooded with #3 grade diesel oil. The Chief Corpsman loved me, (it killed the bugs). The XO didn't have a sense of humor about it at all (he never did). One of my fondest job assignments was filling the MUSE units with fuel. It was required by the Italians that ran the units that I sit down and have a cup of expresso with them befor I filled the tank. I actually grew to like that stuff, Go figure? One of my fondest memories was riding the round robin from Palau to Lamad to the ship, viewing the beauty of the islands and exploring them with many friends. The funniest person I ever new worked on Gilmore with me, his name was Sharky. If your out there get in touch. One of my best friends was a Guy name Nate Sauder. Nate worked in the optical shop for Chief forsyth. Man, they had the coldest Cokes on board! Thanks for the site I will continue to check in from time to time.

Hi my name is Kim Kreitzbender my dad Robert Kreitzbender was on the Howard Gilmore in Charleston S.C.Back in 1962-63-64-1965 ect. He had a friend on the Gimore by the name of Ron Gray his age today would be apox. mid 50's or so just about the same as my dad. Well !!! I was told after 35 years that my real dad might not be my real dad that this Ron Gray could be. Yes I am in Shock ! I am looking for this Ron Gray looking for pictures anything.My dad Robert wont talk about it nor will he get blood test so my only option is to look for Ron. I went aboard the Gilmore right out of Torpedomens A school in Newport RI in 57. Spent afew weeks on mess cooking, peeling potatoes, carrots & CPO (celary, peppers & onions). I worked for a great cook then. He let me take awhole Thanksgiving dinner home so my wife and I could have a nice dinner together since I had to be on the ship the whole day (guests on board you know). Spent some time on subs to check torpedo tubes as part of my job. Didn't care much for being inside those things when they closed the inner door. Some names that come to mind someone might remember, Tm2 Houck,TM2 Willey Hayes, TM3 Gorden Akers . The Gilmore in Key West wasn't air conditioned HOT!!!!! but I wont forget those Lobster tales we would have for eveing meal, fresh just off the boats. Wehad a young fellow get hurt (killed?) in a motercycle accident can't remember his name, (sad). Could go on with tales but time catches up.

Wow! Interesting stuff! I was on the "Gilly" from Spring '79 thru Decom. I remember that it didn't rain for like six months when I first got there. A good portion of the crew was high on hash at most times. I remember; Big club, ferries-round robins, Palau, shore patrol, Paninis and Bier-Gran Pieroni, stuffy officer's wives always pissed at us enlisted "kids", the Italian Marines and their fascination with us "wacky yanks", the expensive yachts that arrived in summer, burgers and fries at the club by the pier. Captain Klinedinst(XO) was a wondeful man and officer that often served the crew in the chow hall. Everyone loved him. CapTain Allen-the C.O., was despised by most. Capt. Klinedinst just made O-6 then the terrible accident with the line snapping....It wounded a SN and a BMC also. The BMC was a nasty, depraved man that enjoyed humiliating and screaming at everyone. I keep in contact with a very wacky former Boatswains mate named Jerry henson - he lives in Huntington, W.V. now...I also remember the CNO visit-I drove his luggage! They built a barracks on the pier and named it Klinedinst hall - after the beloved fallen Captain. Nobody thought Gilmore would make it back to Norfolk, she was bad rusted down the keel, it made it in 17 long days though....More later when I remember it....!

I am currently a Staff Sergeant (E-5) in the USAF.(sorry) I am very proud of my dad and what he did while serving in the U.S. Navy.
Also, I was a member of the USAF Base Honor Guard at Ramstein AB, Germany during the cerimony for the arrival of the bodies of the USS Cole Disaster. It was a very emotional time for me. I don't care what branch of the service we hail from, we are ONE team and it hurts when we lose members of that team!

I served aboard Gilmore from October 1978 until Septmeber 1980 in beautiful LaMadd. I experienced the return transit home from LaMadd to Norfolk for decommissioning, no fun as an engineer! I transferred a week or so prior to decommissioning. I was a MM1 assigned to Engineering Department, M&A Division. I worked in the O2N2 Plant and Fireroom. My oldest son was baptised in the Ship's Chapel in April 1980, perhaps the last baptism held aboard the Ship!?
All in all, a good, but tough tour.

I served aboard the Gilmore from 1955 - 1958. I worked in the main machine shop. I would like to hear from any other machine shop hands.
The machine shop furnished people for the special sea detail as lookouts on the flying bridge. I remember coming into Havana Harbor once for three days liberty after an operation in the Virgin Islands. As we were approaching the sea buoy, seven destroyers came steaming up and signaled with light message "we will stand in" and the captain ordered send them back "WE WILL STAND IN". The destroyer sent back message "we have Capt.such and such aboard and "WE WILL STAND IN". Our Capt. said signal them back "Captain McClintock, (I think), is aboard and I am senior to him by three months and WE WILL STAND IN". The destroyer's had to wait for the pokie old Gilmore to waddle in ahead of them!!

I boarded the "Happy Howie" in Jan of 72 and rode her through the yard periods in Mobile and Pascagoula, then on to the Rock in Sardinia. Stayed on till April of 74. Was an MR in the machine shop. What a fine, fine page you have created here. Talk about nostalgia! I even recognized a couple of names here.

I served on the Gilmore from April '66 to April '68 in Charleston. I was an MR3 in R2 Division, the Inside Machine Shop. I remember names like Gary Orndorff, Bleckert, Templeton, LC Reed, Larry Marquart, Malone, Thiry, Chief Gray, Lt. Amaro, Mark Klammer, Bob Varing, etc. The memory is fading. I still have the cruise book from Springboard '68. I actually wrote some names in there, who would of thought of this type of communication. I think this is just the greatest thing to be able to read some of the emails and remember those days. Would love to hear from anyone who may remember me. Anyone remember how cold it was the day we left?

Hi my name is Kim Kreitzbender my dad Robert Kreitzbender was on the Howard Gilmore in Charleston S.C.Back in 1962-63-64-1965 ect. He had a friend on the Gimore by the name of Ron Gray his age today would be apox. mid 50's or so just about the same as my dad. Well !!! I was told after 35 years that my real dad might not be my real dad that this Ron Gray could be. Yes I am in Shock ! I am looking for this Ron Gray looking for pictures anything.My dad Robert wont talk about it nor will he get blood test so my only option is to look for Ron. Came on board Jan72. Went mess cooking 3 months,and met the animal locker guys. Got me to the shipfitter shop and made me aprt of the animal family. Still have my card. Would like to go to the reunion just let us know. Made the yards and the cruise to La Maddalena. Had a few sea bats come on board while enroute. Can't imagine that. I was assigned to the Gilmore, briefly, before transferring to the Medregal in 1951. My entire four year tour was Key West oriented; SONAR school, Gilmore and the Medregal. I came down a seaman deuce and left as SO1(SS). It was a good time in my life and prepared me for a long career in the computer business with IBM. Its hard to believe that it was fifty years ago. I must have been just a kid.

I was on the Gilmore 1976 to1977 I was ms-3 I had breakfast watch I loved Lamadalena and Palau I remember another cook named christianson Chief White was head of supply div and we went to france niece I think and spain twice. I remember cigs were 20 cents a pack with ration cards I remember the liberty boats missed them alot I'll always remember the times I had and the guys on the ship like it was yesterday. Served aboard the Gilmore from 6/79 until 10/80. I loved my time aboard. I remember how just about everyone in the DK office slept in the DK office and not in the berthing department. I don't how that got started, all I know is that it was in place when I arrived. But it was so cool! IOh yes, we also showered in the decon head (we in Disbursing always thought we were a cut above - go figure?)
The Disbursing officers I served under were Mr. Hamann and Mr. Bozzuto. Some other characters were DK1 Belangue, DKC Puppel (the pup), DKSN John (the kook) Coccurello, DK2 Dennis Orcutt, DK2 Mike Miracle, DK2 Barrett Meehan, DK2 Greg Augustine, and DK2 Sutherland. (Hope I didn't miss anyone.)
And yes it's true, the first thing everyone wanted when they got back to the states was a Big Mac. Yours truly included!
I remember the Capt. Kliendienst accident and am still saddened to this day. He was a fine officer and person.
Some other things I remember are (in no particular order): Mr. Purcell, Mr. Coon, Mr. Allen, Alfredi from Personel, Ens. Jensen (who liked punk music) and his LOVELY wife, the Circle Lounge, the ship's store where a bought great tape decks and cassettes from, (remember how the cassettes were under plexiglass?), the first class mess where I served my 90 days - man those guys were cool, we got to watch a different 16mm movie everyday while eating!

Dear Mr. Brown,
My name is John Nichols. My Dad, James Floyd Nichols served aboard the USS Howard W. Gilmore.
While my dad was serving on board the USS Howard Gilmore he was killed in a motorcycle accident somewhere in Key West around June of 1955 where the USS Howard Gilmore was docked at the time.
I was 11 months old in 1955 when it happened so I really do not have any actual memories of my dad. I only have some pictures and what I have been told.
I can't say how much I really appreciated seeing the pictures of the USS Howard Gilmore and knowing that I was looking at the decks my father lived and walked on. I also enjoyed reading the stories and getting a feeling of what kind of things might have went on back then.
If possible I would really like to know more about my dad and talk to anyone that might have known him. Of the few pictures I have of my dad one picture shows him playing a guitar with another shipmate of his. The shipmate in the picture was Bill Bailey. Bill Bailey had visited our house in Arlington, MA after my dad died when I was a little kid. I don't know if you have any information on Bill Bailey or if I am even spelling his last name correctly.
Here is some background on my Dad to hopefully jog a few memories.
My Dad first met my Mom in Boston on the Boston Commons when he was docked in Boston. I believe he use to like to go to a place named the Hillbilly Lounge in Boston and would not think twice about joining in with the band.
My Dad was born in East Prairie Missouri and I believe he enlisted in Pennsylvania. My mother's name was Ann and I have a brother Jimmy and a sister Annie and we lived about 6 miles northwest of Boston in Arlington MA. when my dad died.
I also have an old commissary/PX card that has some additional Navel information on my dad's classification that I could find if anyone could point me in the direction of any Navy department that may have any old records on my dad.

i was a crew member of howard w. gilmore as-16 from dec 78-early 1980. assinged to the port services division. as-16 was my parent command. this was in lamad italy. i made one cruise on the ship to Palma de majorca, spain when i had to do 90 days of mess cooking duty. that was in 1979. I was aboard the GILMORE last week (March 22, 2000) during a parts removal trip to support USS Torsk, which is a memorial submarine in Baltimore that I volunteer aboard. I have a few photographs taken aboard GILMORE, as well as some external shots.
I was very surprised (after going almost completely through ORION, which is moored next to GILMORE) to find a large part of GILMORE has been ripped out aft of the after engine room. I was headed aft past the AUX DIESEL that is located over the After Engine Room, and passed through a door, to find that she is empty from keel to upper deck! The decks were burned and cut out, except for a 15-20 foot area on each side. It was definately a weird feeling to see that much open space! One of our party worked his way aft and found that another section is also missing, though not as deep of an area.

Arrived in Key West aboard a Grey Hound bus in the spring of 1957. A wide eyed curly headed kid,from the Bronx NY,at the ripe old age of 19 and a brand new Mineman 3rd class Petty Officer, only to find that the Howard W. Gilmore was in Norfolk VA. After a good nights sleep in a tempoary bunk they loaded me & my Sea Bag on a plane out of Boca Chica N.A.S and took me to Norfolk where I boared the H.W.Gilmore. I served on board, in the SR Div. A.U.W. shop, until my discharge in Dec. 1958, just before she left for S.C.
I don't remember many names from those days but I do remember the Torpedoman Chief Petty Officer Smith. A slow talking,low talking, gentil man,from South Carolina,that this New Yorker had trouble understanding. I'm happy to say that we did not call our ship by any of the nick-names that I have read in the guestbook, but those were differant times. It must be a generational thing. I had the worst day of my life (up to then) in the spring of 1980 when I was on a trip on a pleasure craft going down the inter-coastal waterway when I spotted the Howard W. tied along side the U.S.S Bushnell in a Norfolk shipyard being dismantaled. I know that you all, the ex-crew, know how I felt.
I would love to hear from anyone that remembers me or served aboard at the same time.

This is an excellent site. I was stationed on the Gilmore as an enlisted man in the ADP shop from 1973-1978. I count some of my most precious moments in life spent with the guys from S6.

I served on the Gilmore in the "F" Divison as a FT from November 1952 to May 1954. We stayed in port at Key West almost all the time. We did spend time briefly at Boston and then a shakedown cruise to Haiti, San Juan, P.R., Gitmo, and the Virgin Islands. I have many pleasant memories of the Gilmore, my shipmates, and Key West.

Was trying to find out if the AS-16 folks were planning on a reunion any time in the near future. I served in Gilmore at La Maddalena SEP 1979 - through DECOM in Norva. I went back to La Mad and sereved in Orion for about a year.

Aboard HWG in 1954 til 1958. Served in Ships Services for the 4 years on board. A close friend was Danny Bartoli, barber, from Wilmington, DE. Also Tommy Fritz from Philadelphia, who sadly was killed in an automobile accident while on leave. Friends with Charles Solomon, Charles Collins. CPO Diaz was the duty chief. I was on the deck force initially and was a striker dental technician at end of 1950 through April 1951. From there I went to dental tech school at Great Lakes and was stationed in Washington D.C. for the remainder of my four years at the Naval Gun Factory dental clinic.

This is an e-mail address change as well as a year 2000 "check in". I served on the HWG in Key West, FL. in 1954-55 as a Pipe Fitter third and second class in the Eighth Division, submarine repair. I also served on the USS Hornet CVA-12, and USS Truckee AO-147. Was discharged as a FP1 in September 1956. The HWG was a grand ship and a pleasure to serve upon. "Diesel Boats Forever!"

Interesting site. I actually saw the names of a few people that I know-- or knew. So now I guess I need to blast out some emails. Actually, I like this site a lot. I was on the Gilmore from the time of the fire in '77 until the middle of '78. I spent most of my time lifting weights and working in the foundry-- and I spent some time as a lackey in P&E... doing stupid things like climbing ladders with nitrogen bottles balanced upright on one shoulder. Or so I remember. Give me a few more years and they'll be full 55 gallon drums of whatever.

Greetings Gilmore Shipmates!
I served aboard the Howard W. Gilmore from January 1979 until Decommissioning. I reported to the ship as a Dental Technician and left an Illustrator Draftsman. I was aboard the ship when we journeyed to Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, at the end January 1979 (one of the first U.S. Navy ships to visit there since the end of WWII). The day the Gilmore was decommssioned it would have run circles around the rust bucket that replaced us in LaMadd (the USS Orion), and to this day I do not understand the Navy's reasoning in decomming that fine ship when it did.

Served as Personnel Officer/ESO/Senior Shore Patrol Officer from 1979 to Decom. Worked for the greatest Executive Officer ever - Captain Paul R. Kleindinst who was sadly killed onboard Gilmore as a result of a line handling accident. Also served with the best Master Chief Petty Officer in Navy - my buddy and partner in crime, PNCM Pat Pursel (Retired). My fondest memories of the Navy were while serving on the "Happy Howie"! I visited La Maddalena, Sardinia recently - you would not recognize the island!

I served on the Gilmore from appr. November of 1953 (boarding in Boston) and was discharged from Key West in August of 1954. I left the ship as a YNT 3rd class. My duties aboart ship were primarily transfer Yeoman. (I made out transfer papers for anyone leaving the ship for other duties.

I served aboard the U.S.S. Howard W. Gilmore from 1955-1956-- I was a pattern maker 3rd. class---Our Chief's name was Hewitt and he carved the wood patterns that were used to make the castings for the plaque of our ship-- and also for many of our subs in our squadron--SUBRON 4 and 12--- he was a great guy and a great man.
I served with many great guys---Olson, Heinsohn, Koester, Jackson, Cusie, Mc Allister, Garafola, Sharron and many others.
