"My Santa" came out of the hatch on this ship and my life was never the same after that. When I'd tell civilian kids that Santa "DIDN'T" Come down the Chimney but out of a hatch on board ship they'd call me names and being typical navy brat I was ready to do battle. My Dad served in WW11 on the USS Miller DD-535 and in the Korean War. He was also on the USS Boxer and USS Midway. Tomlin retired out of Alameda NAS after 22 years duty. My momma served him over 50 years. He is now stationed on the {USS Heaven Couldn't Wait} We all love and miss you tremendously Daddy. Momma especially. Best look'n "White Hat in the USN!"

Hi everyone,
Those of you who were stationed in La Madd 76-79 might remember me. My Dad was stationed on the Gilmore Senior Chief Caldarella (EN) My sister and I would race around crazy in La Madd on our mopeds. One year we had matching silver jackets and were called the silver streaks by the Italians. We had a blast! God those were the day! My Mom was the one who did the hot lunch program for the elementry school grades k-9. Oh and Stagnari is RET and still living in La Madd, saw his name mentioned a few times here. Dad RET in 88 after going back to La Madd in 82 Loved it so much had to do it again. Was Command Master Chief on the Orion. I was there again from 82-84. I did marry En1 Duffy in 85. Any one remember him form the Orion?
Looking for anyone who might remember me. Dependents and crew alike. Looking for Chabot was an Officer dont remember what but trying to locate his daughters kim and Jennifer.
E-mail me if you remember me or my sister Maria.
thanks of the site!!! Melodie~

Sorry for having to sign on a second time. My husband was Ken Greenhouse (Kenny or Greenie). He was a Hull Tech (welder) on the Gilmore from about June of 1975 through May of 1978. He ended up in Shore Patrol for most of our time in LaMad, though and really liked it. Many of you probably knew him because he was a "scrounge" and could get anything for anyone.
We lived near Palau for close to a year and finally were allowed to have one of the new Navy housing duplexes on La Mad for the remainder of our time in Italy.
We loved it there in Sardegna! And really liked how the whole ship was more like a family. I remember the car bombings that took place during our stay there . I sure loved the Italian people there and remember how upset they were at the Red Brigade for the car bombings. Also remember how they used to make fun of the tourists who came to La Mad because they would go around in their bathing suits with everything hanging out (men, too). Ha!
I would love to go back some day.
Ken passed away in 1994 at the age of 49. He had a heart attack.

i served on the "Happy Howie" from '76-"77. my rate was tm3 and i worked in the mk-37 torpedo shop and in Q.A. division. i remember the grass fire well. there i stood up on the hill with the fire coming towards me and lost water pressure to the fire hose. i don't think they ever did get that pump working. i finally just dropped the hose and went back down the hill. what fun. and i remember the commissary fire also. i also remember the night the command master chief"s car was blown up at his house when the "red brigade" thought it would be fun to harass us. but, all in all, i enjoyed the experience. would like to hear from any that might remember me. this is a great web page. glad i found it.

I wish to pray for America and the world. May the Armed Forces of the United States of America tear out the teeth and claws of this evil and demonic dragon. We shall deliver this evil to the gates of hell and with God´s power and might may he cast this beast into the fires of hell forever. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Saw the previous entry by Dan Fanelli and wanted to add my regular remarks. I reported aboard the Gilmore in March '56 after boot camp in Bainbridge, A school in Great Lakes, sub school in New London, then the Gilmore. Went aboard as EMFN, and left as EM2 in August '58. During those years, the Gilmore went to Norfolk to replace the tender there, then to Hoboken for overhaul, then Gitmo for Reftra, Havana for liberty, and back to Key West. We did springboard '58 in Charlotte Amalie V.I., and then Havana again. Married a girl from Key West in '58, spent 21 years in the Navy, and retired as CWO3 in '76. We just returned from a visit to Key West, where I reminisced while watching sunsets from the mole where the Gilmore was moored during the '50's. The Navy is in the process of turning over the mole and old ship repair shops in the submarine basin to the city. The Patio Beach rec area will stay in Navy hands, where us then underage sailors went to have a cool beer in the '50's. Many memories!!

This is my annual sign in. Hoping to find some mates that served aboard in '56-'57 and to correct some dates from past posts.
I arrived in Key West aboard a Greyhound Bus in the spring of 1956. A curly headed kid from the Bronx N.Y., at the ripe old age of 19, and a brand new Mineman 3rd class. Only to find the Gilmore was in Norfolk V.A.
After a good nights sleep in a tempory bunk in a barracks on base they loaded me and my sea bag on a plane at Boca Chica N.A.S. and flew me to Norfok where I boarded the ship.
I served on board , in the SR Div. AUW shop from 1956 until my discharge in Dec. of 1957.
One of the worst days of my life (up to then) was the day I was traveling down the Intercoastal Water Way, (I believe it was in 1981) and saw the H.W. Gilmore AS16 tied to a pier in Norfolk being dismanteled.
Luv to here from anyone who served aboard at the same time, especially from the first Springboard Ops and our cruises to PR and Havana, etc.

FOR THE RECORD, THE E-MAIL ADDRESS LISTED IS MY EX-WIFES.
MY NAME IS DAVE WILLIAMS. MY DAD (RICHARD WILSON WILLIAMS), NICKNAMES WERE EITHER (WILLIE OR DICK), WAS STATIONED ON THE GILMORE IN CHARLESTON, S.C. TWICE FROM 57 THRU 64. DURING THAT PERIOD HE WAS TRANSFERRED TO KEY WEST FOR SIX MONTHS, THEN BACK TO CHARLESTON AND BACK ON THE GILMORE. I WAS 9 YEARS OLD IN 1959, SO I DON'T REMEMBER A LOT OF DETAILS. I FOUND THIS WEB PAGE TRU "THE SEEKER" MAGAZINE. I READ THE ARTICLE WRITTEN BY KIMBERLY KKREITZBENDER. I KNOW IT'S A LONG SHOT, KIMBERLY, BUT IF YOU E-MAIL ME THRU MY EX'S COMPUTER, I WILL GIVE YOU MY DADS' ADDRESS. HE MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN RON GRAY. MY DAD WAS A MACHINIST ON THE GILMORE. HIS RANK WAS FIREMAN WHEN HE FIRST BOARDED HER IN 57 AND 1ST CLASS P.0. WHEN HE LEFT HER IN 64. HE WAS TRANSFERRED TO SAN DIEGO IN 64, THEN LATER HONOLULU AND SAN FRANCISCO. HE NOW HAS A HOUSE IN HONOLULU AND ONE OUTSIDE OF SAN FRANCISCO. HE RETIRED IN THE LATE 70'S AS CHIEF E9. HE SPENT A LOT OF YEARS IN THE NAVY AND KNEW A LOT OF PEOPLE. LIKE I SAID, IT'S A LONG SHOT THAT HE WOULD HAVE KNOWN RON GRAY, BUT IT WON'T HURT TO ASK. YOUR ARTICLE CAUGHT MY EYE FOR TWO REASONS. THE GILMORE AND TRYING TO FIND OUT ABOUT YOUR DAD. I HAVE HAD SIMILAR EXPERIENCES IN MY LIFE, SO I CAN RELATE TO YOUR SITUATION. GOOD LUCK. IF THERE IS ANYONE OUT THERE THAT REMEMBERS ME OR MY DAD, GIVE ME A SHOUT. IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO HEAR FROM PAST FRIENDS. ESPECIALLY ANYONE WHO MIGHT HAVE KNOWN JOANNE OR LINDA HARMON. THEIR DAD WAS A LT. STATIONED IN CHARLESTON. JOANNE WAS MY FIRST LOVE. HER DAD WAS TRANSFERRED TO GUAM AT THE SAME TIME MY DAD WAS TRANSFERRED TO SAN DIEGO. I,VE OFTEN THOUGHT OF HER AND WONDERED HOW HER LIFE TURNED OUT. KIDS, GRANDKIDS, ETC.

Served onboard the Gilmore from Oct '77 thru March '79 as a JO3. Worked as the program director for Big "G" TV. I have nothing but fond memories of my time spent onboard her. Loved the $.25 Old Milwaukee's in the Beer Hall. Shipmates included JO3 "Monk" Mike Messer, ET1 Gary Wilson, IC1 Bill Dunlop, JOSN Danny "P'nut" Pearson, JOSN Wayne Blount and FN Mark Mallory. Played football on the ship's 78 team that came in 2nd place to Sigonella in that years ComFairMed tournament, held in Rota, Spain. Anyone that remembers me, please give me a shout.

I served on Animal Shelter -16 from 4/66 to 11/68 when I was separated. Came aboard as an FTSA and left as an FTG2. Was in WR-4 divistion - the Fire Control Shack. "Worked" with guys like Dennis Fletcher, Ron Pint, Chief Cook (& his '62 T-bird named "Eloise"), Frank Hyland, Don Campbell, Don Minor and Rick Burgess. Had some buddies I'd like to hear from: Dominic "Nick" Klein, MM3 and Jim Douglas, DC3 who worked in the Carpenter Shop and was the biggest comshaw artist on the ship. Had a great time on board. I was on the Howie from early 69 to May of 70. I started work in the aft engine room (hated it). When I began to screw up, they sent me mess cooking (loved it). After three months of mess cooking, I put in a chit to request three more months of mess cooking. I was then in charge of 30 mess cooks. The duty was, one day off, one day on...great. While on board, I was unfortunately informed by our Chaplain that my brother Bob had been killed in Nam. He was in the Army 7th Air Cav.. Becoming sole surviving son, I requested a hardship discharge. I was out May 1 70. I fondly remember my tour of duty, most of all my shipmates.

My name is Albert J. Dedebant, III, and I was referred to this website by
my sister, Marylise D. "Missy" Williams. I am proud to say that our Dad,
Albert J. Dedebant, Jr., served aboard the USS Howard W. Gilmore during
WW II as a SK2 (that's Storekeeper, 2nd Class to you landlubbers(smile).
He often said that his fondest memories of his service in the Navy were
those of his duty aboard the Gilmore--both of the grand ship and of the brave men it was his privilege to serve with. He said he never knew a
finer group of men. To those men that served with him in WW II, if any of you are reading this, to you I say, smile when you remember SK2 Albert
Dedebant...he thought the world of you all.
Our Daddy passed away 04Oct73, at only fifty years and six months of age
after a long and valiant battle with cancer. He left behind hisheartbroken parents,a loving wife, two children, and a 4-month-old granddaughter...my daughter, Bevin. You know,I guess Missy and I always knew our "Papa Bear" was a fighter... but never more so than when my daughter , his first grandchild, was born in may of '73.
On 28May73, my (now ex-)wife was struggling to bring forth this new life
...and Dad was fighting with waning strength to stay with us, at least until he knew my first child was here. When Bevin was born, in the wee hours of 29May73, I called the hospital and told Missy. She went and woke up Dad, and came back to the phone crying, and said to me that he was now lying there, tears of joy streaming down a pain-lined butsmiling face, repeating Bevin's name, again and again! She went on to say that he told her:
"Oh, Missy...the only thing that could make me any happier is, if only I could just see her...just one time...but I'm told that babies are not allowed past the 2nd floor (Dad was on the 5th). Well, I went to see our family attorney, a former LA. State Senator...later that day, the USVAH orderlies brought Dad down to the 2nd floor...in the hall outside the elevators, I gingerly laid a bawling newborn baby girl on a gurney, nes-
tled against the weary, pain-wracked body of her beaming Grandfather...
and somehow, I managed to get these words past the lump in my throat...
"Mr. Dedebant...may I present to you, your granddaughter...Miss Bevin
Kaye Dedebant!" Well, the man whose doctor told me that I may as well get used to the fact that he wouldn't live to see his grandchild did in-
deed live to see her born, but also her Baptism...in the USVAH Chapel,
and of course Grandpa Albert held her again...he found the strength to
come home for a visit...and lived until 4Oct73(I DID say that Dad was a
fighter, didn't I?) When Dad passed away, I remember feeling sad that he never saw Missy's son, Lance. When he was in his teens, he wore his hair long. When he cut it, and I saw him with his new haircut for the first
time, I left the room at the first excuse, went into the bathroom, shut
and locked the door...and wept my heart out. Need I say that this hand-
some young man is the living picture of Daddy? Well, okay, almost...
My Daddy took the responsibility of looking out for his family very, very
seriously. I have hypertension and edema (swelling and fluid build-up)
And...I'll be fifty-three on 24Aug01, if God wills it. Well, we'll see.
I've had dreams about my Daddy for the last four nights in a row. And,
on every morning after, I can smell Old Spice in the room. I don't wear
it...BUT MY DADDY DID. Maybe those dreams weren't dreams, after all.
Yeah...I think Papa Bear may be trying to tell his son something...
In closing, I'd like to say Thank You and May God Bless You for this web
site...and for choosing "What A Wonderful World" as its theme. You see,
it has a very special significance in relation to my cherished memories
of my Daddy. One of his favorite things to say was, "Y'know, it's really

From October '67 to December '68, I was a TMSN in WR-1 assigned to the MK-14 shop. I remember the Weapons Repair Dept. Master Chief having a little poem hanging on his wall. I copied it down back then and have it hanging next to my desk here at home.
I haven't looked at it or thought about it for a long time, but for some reason around 1 am this morning it just popped into my head. So I thought I'd put it here in case there are any old tube jockeys like me out there who would like to put it on their wall too.
TM's Lament
It's not my rate to run the ship,
Or lower and hoist the anchor;
It's not my job to fuel at sea,
Or rig the highline to the tanker;
It's not my right to test the whistle,
Or even strike the bell;
But let the torpedo juice get drunk,
And I'm the one who catches Hell!
I know it could be changed around to fit almost any rate, but this is how I remember it and how I have it on my wall.
I sent it as an e-mail to Eldon also, but figured this was maybe a faster way to get it out.

It's great to see photos of La Maddelena (the Rock- as we used to call it). I served from Dec '73 to Jan '74. I worked 13-14 hrs a day in the ships laundry (and spent the remaining few hours of the night drowning my sorrows in the beer hall. Of all the liberty ports, I would have to say Palma de Mallorca was the most fun I ever had in one week of my life. I learned a few things there (I'm sure you guys get my drift)and I'm proud to say I was flat broke when I left. I'm sure glad I came across this website.

While serving aboard the USS Trumpetfish SS425 the Gilmore was our Tender. I remember the elation our crew would feel when we were going to rendezvous with Her. It would be a time when we could get fresh gee-dunks, supplies, necessary repairs, and personal clothing. We felt like it was going home to Mother When I was in Key West, Fla. I would sometimes get to ride the USS Petrel when it was towing a target for the Gilmore to practice with her big guns. We were uneasy sometimes because we were afraid the Gilmore might select the wrong radar image to train the guns on. It never happened but the thought was always there.

I served aboard Gilmore from Oct. 78 to Sept. 80. I was a MM2 and MM1 in Engineering Dept., M&A Div., O2N2 Plant. Stood O2N2 plant, fireroom, and other engineering watches. Also stood inport shore patrol at the CMO (good!) and sometimes rode liberty boats (bad!). Lots of good memories, some bad. I guess the good outweighed the bad, because I went back to LaMadd for four years on Orion from 84-88!

As an HM2, I served from July 1978 to October 1979. I made HM1 while stationed on the Gilmore. I've already found Clyde Yencer, who served part of his tour with me. Clyde posted a couple of pictures of CDR Kleindeinst, our XO who was killed (shortly after I left the ship). If I can ever find a scanner, I have more pictures. I took that series of pictures during the "DC Olympics" which took place on my last cruise. (If only I could remember where we were going on that trip. I think it was Toulon, France - but I could be wwrong). Is there anybody else out there who remembers me?

If Anyone could help me please!:),
I am in search for my real father his name is Ron Gray.
My name is Kimberly Kreitzbender.
The Ron Gray that I am looking for
may possibly be from either AR or AL. He had a very good friend by the name of either Robert or Bob Hinton or Hinson. This is all the information I have on him. Ron Gray the man I am looking for is now I would say mid 50’s he was in the Navy and I know for a fact he was on The ship U.S.S. Howard W. Gilmore in Charleston, South Carolina in 1964. Ron was in the x-division I think .Ron was friends with my mom and dad Doris Kreitzbender and Robert Kreitzbender. I just found out after 35 years about my mom’s and dad’s secret that they both kept from me to themselves all these years. The funny thing is I already knew what my mom was gonna tell me. As a matter a fact I told her what she was gonna say before she said anything. This is something inside of me that I have felt and thought I knew all my life. Intuition I guess.More than anything something in my heart and soul was missing . So if this is you I would love for you and please contact me please i would promise you that you would never regret meeting me and if you are just like me I know I will hear from you. If this is the wrong person I hope you understand why I am writing to all the Ron Grays. Also I know that Ron had a daughter blond blue Eyes he showed my mom a picture of her and she would be a little older than me. I was born on Sept. 8th 1965 I am 35 years old now. I was concieved in Dec. 2nd or third week 1964 when my mom and Ron were together .
Sincerely Thanks.

Great site. I may have the shortest record for serving on the Gilmore. I was transferred from NCS Iceland in Oct of 67 to the Gilmore, spent 6 weeks there and was TAD'd to COMSULANT communications for 3 months. At the end of the 3 months they kept me there till my hitch was up in 1970, so I never got back to Chasn. Short memories, but good ones. Don't remember a soul, but remembered how great everyone was and how easily I was accepted when I first reported. I have some old pictures and I believe the letter that the Captain sent to my family. Will have to dig them up and, if worthwhile, share them with you. Smooth sailing.

Served in Gilmore from 10/62 to 03/65. Was a Torpedoman, Worked in Steam Shop and also had my share of Mess Cooking. Oh, the joy of not being rated. We were all so young then, who would have thought 35 years later there would be a Web Page for "The Rock" much less an internet. Drop a line Shipmates. Jim Conrey, TMSN, Ret.

Heard from an old Gilmore shipmate, Mike Garr of Rapid City, tonight (1/14/01), that there might be a reunion this summer in St Louis. Has anyone heard of this? Would like to attend.

My tour on AS-16 & "The Rock" was from Aug '76-Nov '78. I vividly remember my first underway onboard - there was a fire in the Engine Room the first night. (Good thing I'm not superstitious - on my first dive on my first submarine there was flooding in the Aux. Machinery Room #2!)
I was a DS3/DS2 in ADP Shop (S6 Div) - a great bunch of guys to work with! Sorry, I don't remember everyone; some that I do remember are: DPC Al Palomino, DP1 Tom Marshall, DP3 John Harnisch, & DS1 Jon Olson.
I also remember the "Crazy Hawaiian" ... LCDR Mahelona (sp?)... the Supply Officer; smoked these "stogies" all the time - or always seemed to be chewin' on one, anyway. There was an SK3 Charles who worked in the Supply space next to the ADP Shop. And CWO2 Royal of Ops Dept... I ran into him again in '86-'88 when he was a LT at CSG-9 at NSB Bangor, WA.
One of the great things about this tour was we got underway on a "liberty cruise" about every 3-4 months. Of all the places I was able to see, I especially enjoyed visiting Barcelona, Spain; Athens, Greece; Monte Carlo, and Rome & Trieste, Italy.
If anyone from ADP (S6 Div) from '76-'78 is out there - or any H. W. Gilmore crewmembers for that matter - drop a line and say hello!

My tour was from Nov. 1970 – Aug. 1972 in Key West and on to Pascagoula. I worked mostly in the deck gang but transferred briefly to the machine shop.
My most memorable experiences were racing our deck crawlers, washing the “Happy Howie” with a suicide hose, "Wolfman" playing Mule Skinner Blues at 3:00am and traveling up the Mighty Miss to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The gang that I remember was Chief Jeffcoat, Chief Underwood, Powers, Shoop, Gagliardi. Many good memories.

I am the daughter of Captain Willard J Suits who commanded the USS Gilmore in the 1944-45 time period. I have various photographs of him with shipmates and three shots of the ship painted with camoflage paint and docked subs. These picutures are on the islands of Majuro and Kwajalein. He took the ship to Brisbane but I don't know when he was detached. If any one has information or any LOG information for that time perion (1944-45) I would be interested for the benefit of my children and grandchildren. Thank you from Patricia Suits Kropf (former LTJG USNR)

I served onboard the "Happy Howie" from early 1970 to Aug 1971. I came aboard in San Juan then sailed to Charleston S.C. then to Key West where I was discharged in 1971. I was part of M&A Division as MM2 and worked in the "Oil King" gang. I was one of those guys that took tank soundings in the middle of the night in the birthing compartments. One of the most memorable times was steaming up the Ole Miss River to New Orleans Mardi Gras and of course laying on the beach at Isle of Palms. I checked through the guest books and didn't recognize any names, but it would be great to hear from anyone that may have served on AS-16 the same time I did.

I had a hard disk failure and lost all of my old contacts, so I would appreciate hearing form you again.
