Hey mates,
I was stationed on the Gilmore 1974 and 1975. I served as a RM3 in "Radio Central." Capt. Schrader was the CO during my stay on the Gilmore. During our tour the comissionary and Beer Hall was constructed on Santo Stefano ("The Rock") I worked as bartender at the "Beer Hall"
Admiral Zumwalt was CNO and visted our ship with Admiral Rickover. Would love to hear from anyone serving during this time, Paul Collins, Eddie Hoffman, Mark Young, Weird Harold! Eddie ?
Good Luck guys,

CAUTION - READ this caution BEFORE you SIGN THE GUESTBOOK
GILMORE Sailors beware. I served on the Gilmore in the late 1970s. Within a week of signing the guestbook (seem my entry below) I was receiving SCAM emails about millions of dollars in African bank accounts, and long lost relatives.
This Guestbook seems to be one of many sites being used by SCAMMERS. I think the SCAMMERS use this guestbook and others to collect your email address and add you to their lists.
I sent an email to Eldon Brown and Dan McNerney to ask their help. They took out some of the markers, but others remain (LOOOOLA POOOOPA, OOOOOOOOOO, and some Port sites). Clearly content unrelated to the Gilmore, and all markers that you can search for. Just use Google to search for UZOAGBA. That word was repeated several times in one of the entries they removed.
My recommendation is that until they change the guestbook posting process to pre-screen entries, that you consider holding off signing the guestboook. It's too bad the SCAMMERs use the site this way. Other than that, it's a great website and my thanks to Eldon and all who make it work.
Tom

Miller, underway all the time no fun.I now restore log and cedar homes & I am self employed.I still love the sea. but now I fish the deep in my 24 grady.Sometimes I need anglers .I also have a wonderful wife and child.

I first stepped aboard USS Howard W. Gilmore (AS-16) in the fall of 1978, as a crewmember of USS Baton Rouge (SSN-689). Despite the antagonisms between Tender and submarine personnel, including ugliness after the nightly movies at the movie theater, I made a friend in PH2(DV) "Bart" Bartholomew who was a member of the Dive Locker at a Sunday afternoon church service. He was a sincere Christian and it was nice to make a new friend who was also a brother in Christ.

Reading the notes from other Gilmore Sailors was fascinating. We just knew her as OLD and being retired, but between La Maddelina, Charleston, Key West, etc. she seems to have several 'families' of Sailors.

hello everyone, my name is norm alger and i am the son of richard lyle alger. he served on the gilmore from 1973-75 (i believe) we were stationed in sardegna, italy at that time and used to take PT boats from palau over to la maddalena where the ship was moored. all of my memories of that time were just great! we used to watch movies with other families in the wardroom and i definitely ate my share of jelly donuts. the crew and families were just such great people. i actually have an issue that i wonder if some of you may be able to help me with. my dad suffered a stroke a little over a year ago and he has not been the same. all of his doctors say with some work, he could return to an active life. but dad is depressed and does not work hard to return to his former self. i have two brothers and two sisters and we try, try, try! but, he seems to have more valleys than peaks. i thought that maybe some words from his former shipmates and/or some former gilmore-ians may light a fire under his backside to strive harder. if you have taken the time to read this and would like to drop me a note of encouragement, i will forward your thoughts on to him. i appreciate your contributions of words, thoughts or prayers. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! - a grateful navy brat (Norm Alger)

Hi all. Not sure if the same one's are working there, but.. I used to work with Port Services Division when USS ORION (AS-18) was there. I still miss my duty there and wish I were there now. I was there from 1982 to 1984. Wasn't allowed to stay past that as I had to do some sea duty. If I had a choice back then after my sea duty to where I wanted to go, I would've picked LaMadd Site Component..but, I had no such luck. I lasted from 82 to 89, then started working for the Veteran's Hospitals here in Florida. I have lots of pictures from them of our boats ( LCM 81, 82, 83 and I think 84) and of our barge (Home) and Klindinst Hall. I heard we lost one of our LCM's after leaving the pier of Palau in bad weather a while back. I sure as heck miss you all. It was fun! Back then I was known as BMSN Sherman.

My Father, Thomas G. Re, served on board the USS H. W. Gilmore from 57-61 as a radio man. He always had a lot of great stories to share with me about the time that he had served aboard her. I guess it was due to these stories that influenced me to join the navy myself from 87-92 serving on a battle wagon. It was during my time in the navy that I really got to see the deep devotion that sailors can have to their ship.
My father often talked to me to try to find out what happened to the ship that he served on while I was in the navy. Unfortunately I was not able to find this information out before my father had passed away in October, 1996. I know though that he would have been delighted to see that there is an organization for the ship so people can keep in touch.
If anyone remembered my Dad during his time in the navy and would like to share some stories, you can feel free to e-mail me. Thanks,
Tom Re

I spent some of the most memorable days of my life onboard the Gilmore back in 1977-1978. Sardinia was my home for 18 months. I was assigned to 38Alpha, out side machine shop. My first repair was on the USS Nautilus. There are too many fond memories to relate them all. I left the navy a MM2 and served on two more buckets before going home for good. The adventures I experienced on Gilmore did a lot to prepare me for my future. Now I sail a desk as Chief of Police in Ocean Springs, Ms. I am proud to tell my children that I served with such good men and on so fine a ship. God bless the Gilmore and my she have fair winds and following seas through all our memories.

I served on the rock in the Pipe Shop mainly under Chief Holt 76-77. I left when we were in Drydock in Naples and the fate of the ship had been determined. I worked on just about every SSN from the Nautalaus to the Los Angeles. My buddy Mike McDonald recently told us that Rick Ford has passed on. I wonder how Yancy is doing.

Glad to see all those shipmates from 78-80 showing up here. need to hear from tripp, tom brown, crily, chewy, bogartus, big bob, ed larson, lee maddi, gary serwatka, like hearing from mark and donna sagneri(the grand parents) Whats up Kutch? loved riding in that 2 cylinder car. If some scruffy looking cook handed you a cinnamon roll on your 0400 watch it was me, in the main gally it was jonny winter and frank zappa or bob dylan and always loud except when the xo was serving. I never got sea sick and was on the bridge during that big storm we hit, just so I could look out a window or surfing accross the mess decks on a pool of bug juice. Sharkie, that bar window story we have from spain is a doozi and if any one remembers being found passed out and bleeding from the lower leg and waking up in the barcilona hospital, your welcome from me and I think tripp. like I siad before if I knew I was having so much fun, I would have stayed. who knows I may have made e-4 by now.(a few times). for the past 20+ years I have been re-upholstering office furniture for Detroit based corporations, Fishing the great lakes and bird hunting with my 2 shorthair pointers (like the red one that lived with me and Kutch in lamadd) C-Ya Tim

I have been getting some e-mail about the Gilmore and her return to service. You can get information from the tendertale.com and go to links, and look-up the USS Orion AS18. When you get to the Orion link and click on it, down on the left side is a heading called Operation Enduring Service or use the 2003 link. When you click on the link, you will sent to the Beaucamp sight and in the middle of the page is the same Operation Enduring Service. The pass word for this link is vetern. This will get you into all the information you need for learning what will happen to the Gilmore and Orion and why this is happening. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. If someone who lives close to the Marad station where they are moored could keep us updated on the movement of the 2 ships, we would really like that. Just let us know when they leave or move. I too had my email to you kicked back... Reason: Recipient:<"sullivan,g,j"@attbi.com; not our customer
Was just glancing thru the Howie K website, to see if anything new & helpful had been posted since I made mine. Glory Be! I remember all the great times we had (well, most of them anyway ;-) So wonderful to see your post... I cannot describe. We were true bros down there & I still think of you & Skip Watson & Bob Grimm and many others too many to mention. I gladly forget the name of that shit-ass LT we had tho. Had I been aware there was a reunion in Key West last year, or I'da made it. I still live in South FL... couldn't bear to leave paradise, you know?
Hadn't been back to KW for 21 years till I got sent down on a job assingment in '93. What I saw made me wanna puke. The old sense of place is gone & now it might as well be in Jersey. The middle Keys are still cool... been camping there a couple times.
But nothing can ever take the glorious times we had together... & thinking back, we had it pretty damn good. Life isn't quite so carefree anymore.
I got divorced in '95, but have a beautiful talented intelligent 15-yr-old daughter that just completely lights up my life.
More later, K Bro? Thanks for posting cuz I've always wondered what happened to us all afterwards. I did spend a night with Oscar McCosker up in Atlanta a few years back. He's like a big-wig for Avon... beautiful house, beautiful wife (go figure) & the same old quacking duck.
Best Regards to You My Friend... let's see if we can get this going; I tried a couple SKs on board with us & every single e-mail bounced back. Could be this website's e-mail server
Anyway George... great to her from You!Your bud forever......... Sam

I spent time on the "Rock" from 03/78 till 05/79. I was a DP in the S-6 Division. Chief Wolfe was our leading CPO. I worked with a bunch of great guys, Miller, Peetz, Langston, Lennon, Palamino, Gartland, Olsson. Had a great time on the Gilmore and had a chance to go back on the Detroit and give her an vertrep.

Reported aboard the Gilmore in November of '68 as a 3rd class shipfitter
and was assigned to R-1 Division, shop 11-A (AKA Animal Locker) while the
Gilmore was home ported at Charleston, South Carolina.
Highlights of my tour was the San Juan/Virgin Islands trip, Gitmo trip,
Baltimore, Md. trip, change of home port to Key West, Florida, and
February of '71 New Orleans Mardi Gras trip. Separation from sevice in
July of '71 as a 2nd class shipfitter.
Lowlights of my tour was when I crashed my '69 340 Dodge Dart Swinger in
a drag race (and under the influence of alcohol)while homeported at Key
West, Florida.
Was sorry to see photos of the Gilmore's present state on the James River
in Virgina, but am happy she is going to be refitted and tied up at
Pensacola, Florida in the near future; I plan to visit and board her.

Served on board from Feb 78 - Feb 80. Ex-TM1 now CDR LDO. Remember the good times with my buddy GM3 Sikorski. Used to live near the old church by "Red Square" in downtown La Maddalena with my wife Brenda. Lt Gascho was the WEPS. Made the liberty cruises to Athens, Dubrovnick, Palma, Toulon, and Nice. Cut myself shaving the other day ~ it must have been a rusty blade from the old Sperry's hull trying to get back at me!!

I was stationed on the Gilmore in 1970 for a 6 month tour prior to going to nuc school. I was assigned to the fireroom as an electrician's mate. I remember the frequent general quarters drills, which seemed really stupid as we were tied to the dock most of the time, during which all ventilation hatches were closed and the fireroom became an inferno as we were berthed in Key West. In retrospect, we were a US Navy war ship and needed to be prepared, but at the time it seemed sureal and stupid. Most of the guys I knew were all really frustrated with the war in Vietnam and the government anyway. Most all the guys were grumbling about on thing or another about the war.
My only cruise was to Ft. Lauderdale and back to Key West. I was constantly on the shore power mid watch. This duty at the time seemed EXTREMELY BORING but now looking back, I met a great number of guys, and made many many road trips to the mainland,(airport) as a taxi service to the other guys on board. I lost touch with all the guys I knew on board and would like to hear from any of the guys I knew.
I was extremely depressed to see the pitiful shape the ship is in now, but was very glad to hear she MAY be brought back to life.
If anyone remembers this poor nuc puke let me hear from you.....
I would be honored to help anyway I can if the Gilmore needs me again.

My dad, Richard Koehler (Fireman 1st Class) was on the Gilmore right after WW2 (1946-48). He has fond memories of being "welded to the pier" at Key West and sailing down to Guantanamo Bay. The yell of "Captain Midnight...." over the ships PA system. Among a few funny stories was the time when they almost plowed into Truman's yacht when it was moored down in Key West. Ship's Captain was arguing with the XO as to the proper way to navigate and maneuver to docking. The ship at the time had 2 Captains as the Task Force Captain noticed they were heading for Truman's yacht and promptly yelled to drop ALL anchors slamming the ship to a quick stop. He recalls it took a few days to get one of the anchors unstuck. Later he met and shook hands with Truman when my dad was in sick bay and Truman was touring the ship. He remembers going out to sea to be the target for subs to "shoot" torpedoes at for practice. Remembers when the ship's Woody station wagon was dropped on the pier when they were lowering it off the ship to use for shore leave. Dad's 75 now and still going strong. He'll get a kick out of this website and info about his ship. He couldn't believe it is still floating down in the James River. Thanks for a great website and info on the Gilmore.
Regards to all who served aboard the H.W.Gilmore!

As a former Editor of the Ships Globe; I thought you might want to know:
USS Howard W. Gilmore and USS Orion Sail Again
Both ships will be completely overhauled, re-equipped, and repainted. The galleys, machine shops, foundries, etc. will be restored and put back into use. Berthing will be modified and central heating and air will be installed onboard both ships.
The USS Howard W. Gilmore will be equipped to not only supply storage and machine shop support, but will also provide training, berthing and mess facilities for large numbers of personnel from throughout the United States that come to receive a wide range of emergency response training.
The ships will not sail under their own power again. The shafts will be pulled and the screws removed as part of the ships' preservation. The shafts and screws will be preserved and displayed on site as historic artifacts. However, the ships' engines will run in order to generate ships' power.
Sometime between April and June 2003, both ships will be prepared for towing and will leave James River Fleet Reserve and begin their 1,500 mile journey to Mobile, Alabama. In Mobile, the ships will undergo a complete overhaul and refitting. This is estimated to take anywhere from 12 to 18 months, depending on the actual conditions aboard the ships and equipment supply schedules.
Once the yard has finished with the ships, they will be placed under tow for the second and last time to the Pensacola, Florida area. Once they have arrived, the finishing touches will be completed and the ships will be assigned their permanent mooring stations.
You're receiveing this email as a result of your listing on a web site, pass this along to shipmate you know.

I served on the Happy Howie, or as we loving called it the Silly Gilly in 1978 and part of 1979. I worked in the Post Office as a PCSN under PC1 Davis. Had some most excellent times playing shuffleboard in the Beerhall. Santo Stefano was great, but, the times that I spent in LaMadd and Palau were unbelievable. The cruises on the Gilmore were excellent. They included two trips to Palma, Malaga, Barcelona, and Dubrovnik Yugoslavia. We were supposed to go to Splitt Yugoslavia, but, for some reason we ended up going to Dubrovnik. I met alot of great people on the Gilmore and here are just a few of their names. PC1 Davis, PCSN Joe Cassela, PCSN Terry Mott (who may I add saved my life by pulling me out of a burning Navy mail van coming back from picking up the mail at the airport in Olbia),SKSN Richard Brooks, SkSn Ken Banks. There are too many names to list them all, but, they were all great guys, and we had some great times. There was one MAA though that totally sucked, here's to you Maldo.

This is my second entry because I got to thinking about those days aboard GILMORE. I remember her dragging anchor in Naussa. One of the Chiefs,a really big guy, stood on the brow and pulled an entire liberty party aboard from a liberty boat. Captain Rothamel had steak cookouts on the helo-deck during springboard. We even went to the Army-Navy game once. I have lost touch with some old friends and was hoping to get in touch with them. Their names are Don Robinson,Dave Nash and Jack Tracey. My brother and I were both aboard her at the same time. I SERVED ON THE GILMORE FROM MAY 1958 THRU MAY 1960. I WAS ASSIGNED TO THE R-2 DIVISION SINCE I WAS A MACHINERY REPAIRMAN FIREMAN, JUST GRADUATED FROM CLASS "A" SCHOOL IN SAN DIEGO. I MADE MR2 BEFORE MY DEPARTURE.
CHAPLAIN LEONARD SUCKED ME INTO THE SHIPS BAND BEFORE I KNEW WHAT HIT ME. HE SAW IN MY SERVICE JACKET THAT I PLAYED CORNET. HE ALSO HANDED ME A YELLOW LIBERTY CARD WHEN WE WENT OUT FOR A FISHING TRIP ON MY SECOND DAY ABORD. OUR BEARTHING COMPARTMENT WAS NEAR THE FANTAIL ON THE 01 DECK, I BELIEVE.
OUR SHIP MOVED TO THE QUAY WALL SINCE GILMORES SUB RON 4 CAPTAIN WAS SENIOR TO BUSHNELL'S SUB RON 12 CAPTAIN ABOUT JULY 1958..
THEY FILMED OPERATION PETTYCOAT WHILE WE WERE IN KEY WEST AND THAT IS THE GILMORE IN THE MOVIE, WHEN WE WERE MOORED AT THE QUAY WALL BY THE ADMIN BUILDING. I BELIEVE TH USS CLAMAGORE WAS THE SUB THEY PAINTED PINK. SHE NEVER COULD STOP PEELING BLACK PAINT AFTER THAT. THE PINK PAINT WAS ALWAYS SHOWING.
WHEN CHAPLAIN LEONARD WAS ASSIGNED AS THE FLEET BALLISTIC MISSLE CHAPLAIN, I WAS TOLD BY THE NEW CHAPLAIN THAT I WAS NOW IN CHARGE OF THE BAND. HE DID NOT WANT TO BE DIRECTING.
WE WERE IN KEY WEST FLORIDA FOR MY FIRST YEAR AND WAS PLACED INTO PORTSMOUTH VA DRY DOCK IN SPRING 1959. I MARRIED MY WIFE AND LIVED OUR FIRST MONTH IN PORTSMOUTH. WE'VE BEEN MARRIED 43 YEARS AND STILL COUNTING. THEY MOVED MY SLEEPING RACK TO THE ONE ABOVE THE O.D. GRINDER IN THE MACHINE SHOP WHEN INNES, MR2, WAS TRANSFERRED. I RARELY USED IT SINCE I LIVED OFF THE SHIP. HE AND I WERE AWARDED COMMENDATIONS FOR REPAIRS WE MADE TO THE FLEXABLE COUPLING OF A MOTOR ON THE USS PETREL, OUR SUB RESCUE VESSEL.
WHEN WE WENT OUT FOR OUR SEA TRIALS, WE HAD REWOUND MOTORS WHICH GAVE US ABOUT FOUR MORE KNOTS TOP SPEED. WE COMPLETED OUR TRIALS AND WERE ASSIGNED TO CHARLESTON SC. OUR SHIPS BAND GAVE THE 6TH NAVAL DISTRICT NAVY BAND REAL COMPETITION WHEN WE ARRIVED. THE CAPTAIN HAD TO CALL DOWN TO STOP US SINCE THE COULD NOT HEAR TO MOOR THE SHIP.
SUB RON 4 GAVE TWO SUBS TO BUSHNELLS SUB RON 12 IN KEY WEST AND WE PICKED UP THE HARDER, DARTER, TRIGGER AND TROUT. THAT GAVE US 12 SUBS.
I SAW THE PROTEUS, AS-19, CUT IN HALF AND FLOATED APART 44 FEET FOR THE NEW POLARIS MISSLE REPAIR BAY WHILE IN CHARLESTON. SHE WENT TO SEA BEFORE I DEPARTED. I SAW THE USS ALBACORE, WHICH WAS THE DIESEL PROTOTYPE OF THE PRESENT SUB DESIGN, WHEN SHE CAME ALONG SIDE FOR A SHORT TIME. I MISSED SEEING THE FBM USS GEORGE WASHINGTON BY FIVE DAYS WHEN I WAS RELEASED FROM ACTIVE DUTY.
SOME OF THE BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE WERE ON THE GILMORE. I WOULDN'T TRADE MY TIME ABOARD FOR ANYTHING. I'M SURE I WASN'T THINKING THAT WHEN I WAS THERE AT THAT TIME. I HAVE MOVIES OF CUTTING THE LAST LINK OFF MY SHORT TIMERS CHAIN.
I WOULD ENJOY HEARING FROM ANYONE WHO SERVED THEN. I HAVE SOME GILMORE GLOBE NEWSLETTERS, A BRONZE SHIPS ASHTRAY AND A FRAMED SHIPS PHOTO WITH THE RIBBONS WHICH PROVIDE MEMORIES.

Hello ! Just got an email from a shipmate who doesn't remember me but wants to check out the album, and tells me the link didn't work. Does anybody remember the WR-1 Division Officer, Gunner Van Dyne? I ran into him on the Orion in '77 or '78. He was a Lt. Cmdr then working for SubLant. Still as squared away as ever.

When I read what George wrote it made me think that losing anchors must be a past time for ships like these. It's been so long ago, late 70's, that I can't remember if it was the Gilmore of Orion that lost its anchor. Again I don't remember if we were anchoing out off of Sicily or Greece. We we only going to be in for a night hence no lioberty. I thought losing the anchor was just a fluk, but now I see it may be SOP. Paul sends

Served in Gilmore 10/62 to 03/65. Worked in Steam Torpedo shop, beneath after mess decks, also as mess cook, compartment cleaner and Captain of the Head. The recruiter told me life aboard ship was clean but not who kept that way! Had a good tour and met some fine men and a few stinkers. The Gilmore was my first and only ship and learned a lot while aboard. Looking back it seems like a few years, but it was two liftimes ago. Left Gilmore at age 21, now pushing 60 real hard. We were so young. Drop a line if we were shipmates. Where is Dirty Debbie?
