In April, 10 students from UPA will travel to Washington DC to participate in a study program with the Close Up Foundation. We have already secured a scholarship for $500 for each student, and the families of the students are also contributing a significant amount, but in order for this trip to happen, we must raise an additional $500 per student.
UPA is an Oakland public middle school in the heart of the Fruitvale neighborhood. 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Most of the students going on this trip are first or second generation Americans and will be the first in their family to go to college. This trip will certainly make a profound impact on each students, their families, our school, and our community.

Run for Kids!
On March 27 & 28, 2010 Oakland will host it's first marathon in over two decades. The Oakland Running Festival also offers a 1/2 marathon, a 5 km twilight run, and a kids fun run.
You can run any distance and help the students of UPA. Simply email dguikema@yahoo.com and let me know that you would like to help.
When you sign up:
There is no fund raising minimum (although we challenge each runner to raise at least $500, enough to send an UPA student to DC!)
You will get a daily training program for either the marathon or 1/2 marathon.
You can join free coached workouts twice a week.
You will get a template email/letter to send to friends to make fundraising very easy.
You don't need to collect any money since your friends will donate on line or by sending a check.
All donations are tax deductible.
You will get the great satisfaction of doing something good for your health as well as our community!
There will be prizes and incentives for top fundraisers :-)
Your only personal cost is the registration for the event.
