Families gather to see us off!  (Look close to see who else is there!)

After a "red eye" flight we arrive to DC for our first glimpse of the White House

Cherry trees, tulips, and perfect weather added to the experience
UPA students, with Mr. Guikema, spent most of the first day exploring DC on our own.  We then met up with other school groups that were also part of "Close Up".

The learning continued during evening workshops, lasting until 9:30 PM each night!

The tour included several of the Smithsonian Museums, including Natural History, American Indian, and Air and Space.

After saying "good bye" to our new friends and the Close Up program, we hopped on Metro to U Street where we saw the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum.  We were honored to meet and hear a lecture from the museum's inspirational curator, Hari Jones.

... and then it was time for the long journey home!
