Soniben Rabari lives in Bhuj with her sons and their families in joint family. However she wants to be economically independent and support herself as much as she can. She joined project UAK when we were in search of embroiders who could help us with Rabari Embroidery for small order of hand bags. Having time limit, it was not possible for us to reach many women individually but fortunately we met Soniben who made it easier for us. Belonging to Rabari community she has contacts whom she explained the design and other important details and successfully completed that small order in 2 months time. Since then she is willing to do more embroidery work which has been traditionally practiced in her family/community for generations. However due to limited source of information and right business contacts, she has stopped working as an Embroider but now willing to continue as much as she can. Her fine hand stitches have added more value to those bags and impressed our customers.
If you are interested in hand embroidery (Rabari style) Soniben and her team of few women are happy to offer their skill and knowledge. For any other information, please email us on unitedartisansofkutch@gmail.com
