One source of UCINET start-up issues is user permissions. These can lead to problems both in registering the program and in running any procedure that yields textual output.
Registering
When you buy the program, you receive a registration code. After downloading and installing UCINET, you must then start the program, go to Help on the main menu, and choose Register. Enter your userid and registration code in the spaces provided (best to cut and paste them because they have to be absolutely exact). If you were given only a registration code, enter your name (e.g., "Bill Smith") in the userid field.
Sometimes, even when the user has administrator rights, Windows won't let UCINET write to the registry unless the program is running in elevated mode. So here's what you do. Go to Start|All Programs|Analytic Technologies and right-click on UCINET. Then choose "Run as Administrator". When UCINET starts up, go to Help|Register and enter the registration information. Should now accept it without error.
Running a Procedure
If you run a procedure and you get no output at all, or you get an error message saying that UCINET can't open an output log file, the problem is that UCINET does not currently have access to a folder where it has permission to write temporary files. So what you do is go to Options|Scratch Folder and choose each option in turn until you find one that seems to work. Typically Temp or AppData will work.
