Our Church and its History
Historic Church in County Seat of Fillmore County
Located at 906 H Street in Geneva, Nebraska, the First Congregational United Church of Christ is a beautiful facility, dominated by a blue stained glass window at the front of the sanctuary. The building and fellowship hall were built in 1926 and have been well-maintained and updated. The church will seat approximately 220 people, while the fellowship hall will seat 150 for dinners and/or meetings. An educational wing with six large rooms was added in 1961. Updated audio/visual systems were recently installed that allow the fellowship hall and the sanctuary to be used simultaneously or independently.
The history of the church dates back to October 13, 1886, when papers of organization were filed in the Fillmore County Courthouse. At the time of formal organization, there were 27 charter members listed. The first services were held in the Opera House. The original building was erected in the early part of 1887. In June 1925, this building was torn down to make way for the present building to be built. The educational wing was added in 1961.
Our Historic Reuter Organ
When the church was built in 1926, a 15 rank Reuter organ was installed at a cost of $7,500. It is listed at Opus 159 on their list of installed organs. Chimes were added in 1951 and extensive work was done in 1976. The organ underwent a complete renovation and upgrade in 2020. It has been upgraded in many ways so that our organists can provide beautiful music year round.
