Tablet in car

My next project is the replacement of my car stereo with a (Nexus 7?) tablet. Due to the size (less than 2-DIN) of this tablet and its features it is an excellent piece of hardware to use in the car.

In The Netherlands you can get one for 180 euro's. Given that its successor will come in july 2013 it may even come cheaper in time.

The features I want it to use for:

Prerequisites:

    • tablet easy detachable (magnets) fits in pocket

    • chargeable

    • audio connection for audio amp to speakers

    • ISO plug compatible

    • universal as possible for other car solutions

    • it must handle USB 2.0 hub for attaching multiple USB devices

    • 250 Gb 3.5" HDD/SSD must be detachable, mount in glove box

Nice to have:

    • Wifi Tethering to share HDD media content to other passengers

    • 3G USB data dongle for traffic info or onboard internet (and Tethering for other passengers)

What needs to be done to get it build? Since the tablet itself is very thin it leaves a lot of room to play with in the dash itself.

    • ISO connector plug,

    • (perhaps even 2) USB cigarette lighter adapters, 2 Amp each

    • USB 2.0 Hub

    • 250 Gb 3.5" USB 2.0 HDD/SSD, USB connector in glove box

    • USB DVBT/DAB+ dongle and antenna (maybe the builtin car antenna will do)

    • Audio amplifier (like this or this with usb)

    • Nice front finish

As this projects gets started and progresses I will keep you informed here.

I might switch to Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 2.0 WiFi since it has a single connector. Need to find the docking pin (Togo) capabilities of the Nexus 7.

The Tab 7 opens possibilities for in house TV (HDMI) operations too with the Samsung docking station.

Fitting it all into a 1-DIN solution will make it ever more universal.

The TAB 7 2.0 has 30 pin connector. But I cannot find any connector with: USB charge (client) and OTG (host) and audio out. I don't want to make it myself. Perhaps mix this and this? Anyone? (deal extreme, alibaba, chinabuye, aliexpress, chinavision)

Note: after feasibility study I decided to drop the project. Mainly for the lack of analog FM Radio support on Tablets and the very little DAB channels in The Netherlands. I do continue with some parts of it. But my normal Android phone will do that. No need for a tablet.
