Scouts learning about fire

Here in Southern California we really appreciate the danger of fires. Scouts know that fire is also an important tool for outdoor activities, but only if you learn to handle it safely and use the right techniques. At last night's Troop meeting, we were honored to have one of our local fire fighter/paramedics speak about his job and his experiences. Scouts learned and practiced a variety of fire starting techniques including the flint and steel (ferro-rod) shown here. It's not as easy as it looks on TV!
