Mitigwa's Future Forest Program

Camp Mitigwa is pleased to announce its new Future Forest Program. Mitigwa's forested ridges, camp sites, and trails have been providing memorable experiences for Scouts and Scouters for 90 years. Many of the trees shading camp today were already mature when the camp was new, but even trees eventually grow old. Old trees become unsafe around buildings and campsites and need to be replaced. Newly developed areas of camp need to have trees planted to add shade, increase beauty, provide wind protection, and improve wildlife habitat. The Future Forest Program is planned as a long-term effort to meet those needs and insure that Mitigwa's forests and landscape trees remain safe, healthy, and beautiful.

The Future Forest Program kicks off on Saturday, October 5, 2013, with an event at Camp Mitigwa. The day's program will include demonstration tree planting, lunch, hands-on tree planting at designated sites around camp, and a possible harvest of seed from native trees will be grown for future plantings. The program's focus will be primarily native trees from local genetic sources.

Individuals and units can participate in the program by sponsoring one or more trees. Each tree costs $100, which covers the cost of the tree, mulching, and ongoing care. Attendance at the October 5th program is not required, but the $100 fee includes up to five individuals to attend the program with lunch provided. Lunch will cost $5 for each additional person attending the program. Tree sponsorships and registration for the event can be made on-line at Mid-Iowa Council's web sitewww.midiowacouncilbsa.org.

Plan to participate in Camp Mitigwa's Future Forest Program. The trees you sponsor will help ensure that Mitigwa's forest continues to provide a safe and beautiful place for Scouts and Scouters to make memories far into the future.
