Conferences and Special Issues of Journals
The subcommittee on emergency evacuation were involved in the organization of several conferences during 2010, including:
The National Evacuation Conference (NEC)
The NEC was held at New Orleans in February of 2010. The conference was sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Governor’s Office for Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness in Louisiana, and the Federal Emregency Management Agency (FEMA). More than 70 speakers from around the U.S. and abroad presented on topics that ranged from the challenges faced by special needs populations during disasters to national evacuation policy development. The materials presented at this conference led to special issues of the Journal of Transportation Safety and Security and Journal Risk, Hazards and Crisis in Public Policy (see below). The conference was attended by TRB officials, in addition to others.
· “Emergency Evacuation Modeling,” Special Edition of the Journal of Transportation Safety and Security, Vol. 2, No. 2, 116 pp.
· “Assessing the Complex and Multidimensional Characteristics of Evacuation Incidents,”
