As a supplement to our regular Language Arts class, 5th graders will be participating in the Accelerated Reader program. AR allows each child to read at his/her own level by choosing books from the library then taking computerized comprehension tests. Each test is worth a predetermined amount of points. Each trimester, your reading teacher will meet with your child to set his/her AR goal (the number of reading points we expect him/her to achieve). The goals will be determined based on a variety of things.
STAR test
This test combined with past performance, rate at which a child reads, and overall attitude towards reading is used to determine individual reading goals.
Goals will be set with the teacher based on 45 minutes of reading a day/5 days a week
25 minutes in school (some students may have less in school time and goals will be adjusted accordingly)
20 minutes at home
Novels Read in Class
We will be reading a number of books during class time that are AR books. Students will be expected to test on them and can count them toward their AR goals. Goals will be adjusted so students read outside of class to make their goals.
Love of Reading
The more a child reads, the more he/she achieves! It is our goal that your child reads often and a lot! Our ultimate goal is that your child becomes a lifelong lover of books. Some children have achieved this goal others have not. Please get actively involved; Read with your child, talk about what they are reading, read yourself. When it’s one of those days when they just don’t want to read, read to them. Make it an enjoyable experience! We will be doing our best to do the same.
