+ League draft records show that this traded pick came in the fourth round. Shirley Johnson, Greens archivist, says that team records from the Timbers long disputed this judgment, suggesting instead that the Timbers drafted Pedro Martinez and then picked Rene Arocha with what was Chicago's fifth-round pick. Johnson says that a careful analysis of the records supports the league position, but ambiguity remains. "Chicago wanted to draft Derrick May, but May was already on the Timbers. So Rolf traded May for the pick on the spot. He says that he drafted Pedro with that pick in the fifth round, right after drafting Arocha. But the teams papers don't show that the Timbers drafted Arocha at all."

"In hindsight," explains Johnson, "the player to pick there was Mike Piazza, but Timbers documents from the time show that they weren't overly impressed by his MLEs. Plus, they'd already drafted their two catchers of the future in Dave Nilsson and Carlos Delgado. Who knew?"
