True or False (2 points each, 10 total):

Identify these statements as either true or false. If it is false, please correct it.

1. Henry VIII regretted having to annul his marriage to Anne of Cleves.

2. Catherine Parr persuaded Henry to restore his daughters to the royal succession.

3. Catherine Howard was first cousin to Jane Seymour.

4. Jane Seymour died of a disease called childbed fever.

5. Catherine Howard was very quiet and demure.

Matching (10 points):

Match the statements below with the correct wife, either Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard or Catherine Parr.

1. She was executed while still in her teens.

2. Henry thought that her portrait was not at all accurate.

3. She survived her royal husband.

4. She was Henry's 'rose without a thorn'.

5. She married Henry just eleven days after his previous wife died.

Mottoes (5 points each):

Traditionally, a new queen would choose a motto for herself. These mottoes often give an interesting perspective on these women. Katherine of Aragon, for instance, chose "Semper eadem", Latin for "Humble and Loyal"; Anne Boleyn's was "The Most Happy"; and Catherine Parr chose "To be useful in all I do". If you chose a motto for a new stage in your life (maybe you're going off to college, graduating, or getting your first job), what would it be? Or maybe you'd like to create your own motto for someone we've already studied in this class. Write one to three sentences about your reasons for choosing this motto. You can create up to four mottoes if you like, for 20 points total.

Essay/Opinion (10 points):

Before choosing Anne of Cleves, Henry considered several possible brides. One was Christina of Denmark, said to be one of the most beautiful women in Europe. When an English ambassador hinted that Henry was considering her for his fourth wife, the spirited Christina, far from being flattered, is said to have replied, "If I had two heads, one should be at the King of England's disposal," but as things were, she preferred to decline the honor. Marriage to any king was a gamble, but especially so where Henry was concerned, it seemed. If you had been a young lady living in this time, would you have refused like Christina, or taken the gamble as Anne Boleyn did? Give two or three reasons for your choice.

Art (30 points):

No one is quite sure what Catherine Howard looked like, partly because it was common for the portraits of anyone who was executed for treason to be destroyed. There are conflicting reports about her appearance, but the details they all have in common are that she was short, a little plump, and very pretty. She probably had dark hair and was also known to have loved fine clothes and jewels. Draw or create your own portrait of Catherine, upload it to an image hosting site such as imgur and send me the link.

Writing (30 points):

Choose one of Henry's six wives and write a short story about her wedding to the king. Is she happy to be marrying him? What are her hopes and dreams for the future? You can write the story in the form of diary entries or letters if you like, but in any case it should be at least 300 words for full points. If you choose either Anne Boleyn or Catherine Howard, you can write instead about their feelings as they wait for their executions.
