Kennedy’s campaign was trying to sell itself as moderate change that would be more active than the Eisenhower Administration, but not overactive. Kennedy would be seasoned, “but not so dog gone seasoned that he won’t try something new.” He’d be “a man who’s old enough to know and young enough to do.” Behind all these words, there are many different faces who are old and young, male and female, black and while, white collar and blue collar and the chorus says, “it’s up to you, it’s simply up to you.” He’d be better than the alternative, but not extreme in any way and would be appealing to all.
