By using Kennedy’s soaring rhetoric from his inaugural speech and juxtaposing it against a flag at half staff and a grieving multicultural populace, Herblock captured the shock of the assassination alongside the tremendously high ideals, hopes, and expectations Kennedy had created that were now in a sense dashed. This is an excellent visual primary document to encapsulate Kennedy’s presidency and the assassination’s effect on the United States and its future by taking some lesser known words from the inaugural speech to capture the tragedy of November 22.
