On the day after the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion, Kennedy wrote to Soviet Premier Khrushchev to explain that the United State was merely supportive of freedom fighters as he wrote, “The people of the United States do not conceal their admiration for Cuban patriots who wish to see a democratic system in an independent Cuba. The United States government can take no action to stifle the spirit of liberty.” Even though there was clear evidence that the United States had actively supported the invasion, Kennedy asserted, “The United States intends no military intervention in Cuba.”
