How to turn off font smoothing

Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala)

1. You may want to first install fonts that look better with slight hinting, like Verdana (use the ttf-mscorefonts-installer package)...
2. System > Preferences > Appearance
1. Fonts
2. Details...
   1. Under Smoothing select None
   2. Under Hinting select Slight
   3. Click Close
   4. Click Close
