More about our key people

Lander Defense was formed by our passions and sorrows.

It began for one of us after the Aurora Colorado Theater shooting when it became obvious that the gunman could have been easily stopped if only a very few people in the crowd had a real fighting mindset.  Not just being a “Good Guy with a Gun”, but having a deep understanding formed from physical experience about what would work and what wouldn’t.  Knowing what to do in a situation like that doesn’t happen on your first time through, but there simply wasn’t any way available to train for it ahead of time, and that needed to change.  There needed to be a real fighting school for civilians.

For another, it was the need to pass along a vast body of unusual experience in surviving many gunfights and violent encounters.  Far more, in fact, than most other people even in his very violent profession.  It was obvious that the world needs to know what he knows, but nobody seemed to be teaching it, not even the big name firearms schools and instructors.  He does not want his identity revealed, and we have to respect that, but our instructors train with him regularly and trust his knowledge of violence and how to end it.  He likes to say that gun fighting is 98% fight and 2% gun.  This is at the very heart of everything that we do.

Another of us is a martial artist who spent many years striving for perfection, but found the traditional arts lacking in a way to teach their methods quickly.  He believes that the mindset of self defense can be trained quickly if we focus on what is most important today, not what was significant 150 years ago.

All of us realized that most people cannot afford the best and latest equipment, or the big name training facilities.  Everyday people have lives and obligations, but they also have a need for self defense.  So we began to create Lander Defense, not only to be the most effective, but also to be accessible.  We use common and inexpensive training aids instead of the very expensive gear used by others, and we dry fire train most of the time so that there is very little ammunition cost for those who don't have much money.
