Haute Couture in Ancient Greece: The Spectacular Costumes of Ariadne & Helen of Troy brings to life the magnificent costumes worn by Minoans and Mycenaeans of Bronze Age Greece ca. 2000 to 1200 BCE. As valuable as precious metals, a significant commodity of trade, luxurious in design and decoration, Minoan dress rivalled that of its Near Eastern and Egyptian neighbours. Yet, Aegean costumes and textiles have been among the least understood of the major artistic achievements of the Minoan civilization.
Presented as a part of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival 's Arts Program 2018, the Hellenic Museum is bringing the exhibition Haute Couture in Ancient Greece: The Spectacular Costumes of Ariadne & Helen of Troy to Australia for the first time, direct from the United states. The exclusive exhibition launch party will include a special runway event with models displaying the Minoan and Mycenaean garments; displaying to full effect the multifaceted nature of the works. The runway event will be accompanied by a projection installation of frescoes, and an explanation of the clothes, their history, design and manufacture. This one of a kind experience will be followed by an ancient-inspired cocktail party and preview of the exhibition.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION
The exhibition displays garments recreated through Dr Bernice Jones’ meticulous analysis of textiles represented in sculptures and wall paintings of the period. The exhibition includes explanatory drawings of the construction of the garments and hand-woven linen samples of the garments’ cloth patterns, bands and trim. Aegean costume and textiles have been among the least understood among the major artistic achievements of the Minoan civilisation, this exhibition illuminates every aspect of Aegean costume, and the resultant understanding of dress and the way it drapes on the body has led to new restorations of the missing parts of fragmentary garments on figural sculptures and wall paintings.
ABOUT DR BERNICE JONES
Dr Bernice Jones received her Ph.D. in the Art and Archaeology of Greece, Rome and the ancient Near East from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Dr. Jones has taught at Queen’s College, Parsons School of Design, Ringling College of Art and Design and Manhattenville College’s summer in Greece Program. She specializes in interconnections between the Aegean and the Near East in the Bronze Age, with a focus on Minoan and Mycenaean dress and textiles.
Publishing and lecturing widely, Bronze Age Aegean clothes and frescoes are also the subject of her book Ariadne’s Threads: The Construction and Significance of Clothes in the Aegean Bronze Age. Her costume replicas are the result of a detailed analysis of ancient art and texts and are exhibited all over the world, including an upcoming exhibition at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Dr Jones’ reconstructed costumes and wall paintings bring Homer’s heroes and heroines to life by emphasizing their concurrent ancient, contemporary and eternal significance.
