DELOS 2015. Directed by Andonis Theocharis Kioukas

The film DELOS 2015, aims at projecting Delos, the largest and richest archaeological site of Greece, worldwide. DELOS 2015 is not an archaeological documentary in its traditional form; it is rather a film that aspires to speak about the diachronic meaning of Delos. It examines why Delos was a ‘sacred place’ for so many centuries; to show its cosmopolitan atmosphere, its social tolerance, its religious tolerance, its acceptance of ‘others’, its liberalism and the harmonious co-existence of civilizations. Delos aspires to be the home-country of ‘Man’ and to be used as a springboard for the utopia of deification and his immortalization.

Delos had a position as a holy sanctuary for a millennium before Olympian Greek mythology made it the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis; remains show that it was inhabited in the 3rd millennium BC. At its height it was second only in importance to the ancient Greeks as Delphi, covered by a variety of temples and sanctuaries. Located just two kilometers from Mykonos, it sits in the center of the islands surrounded by the Cyclades islands, forming a literal circular border. Those involved in the DELOS 2015 initiative are not immersed in wild flowers that grow over the carved marble, but the road to hope and a dream of a modern humanity, anxious in the unending struggle with death and decay.

Sites & Sounds: Delos

A tour of the greater area of the archeological sites near the modern port of the island of Delos, Greece, including exhibits inside the archeological museum.

The guided tour was a generous offer by the Municipality of Mykonos to the journalists and delegates to the Conference of The Region of the Southern Aegean, which took place between the 25th and 28th of June 2001 on the nearby island of Mykonos. I was covering the Conference for the print media but shot some videos nevertheless.

I filmed with a handheld digital camera, despite the hard-blowing wind. I spent about half an hour tweaking noise-reduction and notch filters within Adobe Premiere Pro but failed to find the sweat spot.

Delos - Island of Apollo and Artemis

Jo Breitenfeld

Published on Aug 5, 2009

Trip to Delos, the sacred island no one is allowed to live on. According to ancient Greek mythology, Apollo and his sister Artemis were born on this island... What is left from ca. 500 B.C. are the remains of a once glorious city - in those times, about 30,000 people, from different religious backgrounds, all lived in harmony (as well as thousands of slaves...). Until Delos was attacked and looted by pirates and gradually abandoned.

DELOS PART 1 GREECE

Danillo Do Dandan

Published on Aug 30, 2013

The island of Delos (Greek: Δήλος, [ˈðilos]; Attic Δῆλος, Doric Δᾶλος), near Mykonos, near the centre of the Cyclades archipelago, is one of the most important mythological, historical and archaeological sites in Greece. The excavations in the island are among the most extensive in the Mediterranean; ongoing work takes place under the direction of the French School at Athens and many of the artifacts found are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Delos and the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

Delos had a position as a holy sanctuary for a millennium before Olympian Greek mythology made it the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. From its Sacred Harbour, the horizon shows the two conical mounds (image below) that have identified landscapes sacred to a god in other sites: one, retaining its pre-Greek name Mount Kynthos,[1] is crowned with a sanctuary of Zeus.

Established as a culture center, Delos had an importance that its natural resources could never have offered. In this vein Leto, searching for a birthing-place for Artemis and Apollo, addressed the island:

Delos, if you would be willing to be the abode of my son Apollo and make him a rich temple --; for no other will touch you, as you will find: and I think you will never be rich in oxen and sheep, nor bear vintage nor yet produce plants abundantly. But if you have the temple of far-shooting Apollo, all men will bring you hecatombs and gather here, women will worship you, and incessant savour of rich sacrifice will always arise, and you will feed those who dwell in you from the hand of strangers; for truly your own soil is not rich.

Delos Vacation Travel Video Guide

Expoza Travel

Travel video about destination Delos in Greece.

During ancient times the Cyclades island of Delos was the flourishing centre of Greek culture. Greece's most extensive archaeological site covers the entire island and since 1872 has been frequented by countless archaeologists. Greek legend has it that this now-deserted island was the birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis.Offering wonderful ocean views, the amphitheatre dates back to the third century B.C. and accommodated around 5500 spectators. Not all of the island's temples were dedicated to Greek gods and a particularly well-preserved sanctuary of the so-called 'foreign gods' formed part of a beautiful temple that was dedicated to the Egyptian goddess, Isis. The lower plateaus on the western side of Kithos Hill contain numerous important cult sites. One of these sanctuaries was the centre of the Hera Cult, the Archaic Heraion, that established itself in 500 B.C. Beautifully restored mosaics with the Phoenician symbol of the goddess Tanith decorate one of the most impressively furnished houses on the island, the House Of Dolphins. The island's ruins indicate its former cosmopolitan nature with its Egyptian, Italian, Phoenician and Jewish traders but due to the destruction of its buildings and the creation of new centres of trade elsewhere, Delos gradually became deserted.

Delos The Island of Gods, Apollo, Unesco Heritage, Drone

Published on Jul 19, 2015

Birthplace of Apollo.

Delos is a Greek island and archaeological site in the Aegean Sea's Cyclades archipelago, near Mykonos. The mythological birthplace of Apollo, it was a major religious center and port during the 1st millennium B.C. The island's ruins encompass Doric temples, markets, an amphitheater, houses with mosaics and the iconic Terrace of the Lions statues. Other artifacts are displayed in its Archaeological Museum.

According to Greek mythology, Apollo was born on this tiny island in the Cyclades archipelago. Apollo's sanctuary attracted pilgrims from all over Greece and Delos was a prosperous trading port. The island bears traces of the succeeding civilizations in the Aegean world, from the 3rd millennium B.C. to the palaeochristian era. The archaeological site is exceptionally extensive and rich and conveys the image of a great cosmopolitan Mediterranean port.
