August Dorhauer

USA Connection

August was born "Johann Christopher August Dürrhauer" in 1824 at Kasseedorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He used his middle name "August" to distinguish him from his father, Johann

He was the oldest of the other three brothers, Heinrich Gottfried Theodore, Heinrich Christian, and Hinrich.

August was the first of the brothers to leave Germany. He travelled to Hull, England on 15th March 1850 from Hamburg on the ship "Hamburg" arriving 6 months before his brother, Heinrich Gottfried Theodore.

He appears on the 1851 census record for St. Pancras, Middlesex with a spouse, a name which looks like "Henrietta" and he signed the marriage certificate of 1851 for his brother Heinrich Gottfried Theodore as a wittness. At this time the spelling of his name  was changed to "Dorhauer" as was the other brothers, Heinrich and Christian.

He then left Liverpool England with two pieces of luggage and travelled to the USA on the ship "City Of Glasgow" to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania  1st February , arriving there in 1853. There is no mention of Henrietta.

His final destination is listed as New York on the ships manifest.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The transcription from the ships manifest was incorrectly transcribed.

His name was spelt as "Dorhaner" and his nationality was listed as "Hamburgh" instead of "German"

His occupation is listed as "Joiner" on the Department of Labor Immigration and Naturalization document dated 2nd January 1853

His life in the USA is sketchy and has not yet been successfully researched. The 1890 Pittsburgh Dirctory lists Albert Dorhauer, August Dorhauer and Fred Dorhauer, all Mill Hands living at 29 Welsh Way. However they may not be related.
