Homework
1. Reading #8: Cornered by the RealWorld: A Defense of Mathematics, linked on the website.
After reading the article, consider the following common situation: A student asks you in the middle of class: “When are we ever going to use this?” How will you respond? What are the other students thinking? Why is the student asking this?
Be prepared to write about this in class next week.
2. POW #5: Play with Desmos and then make a “Desman”. See Fawn’s posthttp://fawnnguyen.com/des-man/ for the requirements and inspiration. See my students' Desmen here. Save it. Add a screenshot to our shared document.
3. OR #6 (last one) : Briefly describe the class objective (SWBAT, CC standard and Math Practice Standard), activity and teaching method for each different class (Summarize your notes from the observation form). In addition, describe how your mentor teacher grades. How does your mentor teacher approach assessment? How often does he or she give tests? What percentage of a student’s grade are tests? How do they give partial credit? How do they avoid being bogged down by paperwork? You may need to interview your mentor teacher to get all the information you need for this reflection. Due end of week 9; Remember to submit your OR to the portal and to me via our shared document.
