Schuylkill Area - Arrests - 1945
This map shows the juvenile and adult arrests for major and minor crimes throughout the city. There are virtually no arrests north of Pine Street; the crimes become increasingly dense through the south. There is a section of extreme density just outside of the boundaries of Southwest Center City on the block between Seventeenth and Eighteenth Streets and South and Lombard Streets.
Schuylkill Area - Land Use - 1945
This map shows the land use throughout the city, from residential to commercial to industrial. Much of Southwest Center City is residential, a mix of single-family, multi-family, and apartments, but has commercial and institutional use scattered throughout, especially along Walnut, Chestnut, and South streets, much like it is today. The area along the Schuylkill is a mixture of industrial land a railroad property.
SCHUYLKILL RIVER PARK PROPOSITION
The next three maps show the existing land use of the area along the Schuylkill and the plans to turn it into the Schuylkill River Park and the Crosstown expressway.
All maps from Twenty-third Street to the Schuylkill River and between Baltimore Avenue and JFK Boulevard.
Existing Land Use of the Schuylkill River Park Area - 1964
The existing land use along the Schuylkill was mostly industrial and commercial, with some park and some residential.
Proposed Land Use of the Schuylkill River Park Area - 1964
The area in the north would stay largely commercial. The industrial land would be compacted to a small area on locust, while what was industrial land before would be converted to playground and park land. The residential land would be virtually untouched.
Proposed Street Changes to the Schuylkill River Park Area - 1964
This map shows the proposed Crosstown Expressway, between Bainbridge and South, which would eliminate housing along the two streets. There is also a proposal for a walkway across the Schuylkill River, and a few street changes along Lombard and South. While the Schuylkill River Park was created, and a few of the streets changed, the Crosstown Expressway was never built.
