Abstract

Populism is a trendy topic in political science and articles dealing with this topic are increasingly present in academic journals. But the research on populism remains largely at the national level and it rarely explores subnational variations of populism or populist phenomena that are limited to a specific region. This talk aims at stressing the importance of including the regional dimension into the analysis of populism and aims at proposing some conceptual and methodological tools. Different examples from recent West-European elections and political parties will be used as illustration. The talk will also focus on a more in-depth case-study of populist and regionalist parties in Belgium and will investigate the link between both party ideologies.
