1101 New Jersey, he served with the 23rd Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry as a 2nd Lt. during the Spanish American war. He invested in real estate and amassed a sizeable fortune. He ran for mayor KCK in 1915. He developed the area which is now known as Heathwood Park. This area was a broad open lot covered with brush and debris which ran alongside the polluted stream of Jersey Creek. Because the park was adjacent to a white residential area and was to be used as a recreational area for African Americans, the city condemmed the park and paid Singletary $15,000. He financed the construction of houses that were located in the area where he lived. . The two buildings at the corner of 11th and Washington Blvd. “Singletary Apartments,” were built by him.
