Accomplishments Continued
Ø Started Community Garden in 2008. At the grand opening, we had in attendance Elected Officials including the Mayor, Youth Build, State Representative, State Senator, Representatives from the Police Department and other Neighborhood Groups.
Ø Received a grant to purchase tools for the garden including a lawn mower and a garden tiller.
Ø Met with students from Wyandotte High School at Big Eleven Lake and gave the history of Strugglers Hill/Roots and answered questions that they had about the area.
Ø Worked with EPA to insure that the water in Big Eleven Lake is safe for consumption of fish.
Ø We test the water at Big Eleven Lake monthly for EPA.
Ø Three of our members volunteered at Douglass Elementary School on “Read to the Students Day.”
Ø Purchases four lots from the Unified Government through the Land Bank Program.
Ø Published newsletter and distributed them to all residents in Strugglers Hill.
Ø Produced a film “Strugglers Hill/Roots, A People A Community.”
Ø Had a Neighborhood Picnic for All Residence of Strugglers Hill in the parking lot of Mount Zion Church of God in Christ.
Ø Purchased a riding mower to keep the grass cut at our garden and the vacant lots that we own.
Ø Started Strategic Planning for our area with the assistance of an Urban Planner.
Ø Established priorities for Strugglers Hill through our strategic planning process
Ø Worked with the Unified Government through the CMIP program and had new sidewalks and curbs installed in the 1200 block of Everett Avenue which was our number one priority
Ø Participated with the Kansas State School for the Blind in their annual musical program.
Ø Provided fresh vegetables from our garden to members of Strugglers Hill and other residents of the neighborhood.
Ø Purchased trash containers that are located on the corner of 11th and Everett Avenue, 10th and Walker Avenue and 13th and Washington Blvd.
Ø Had four additional person to participate in the NCCP training program, this makes a total of seven persons who have attended and completed this program.
