LATE MR T J FARNELL - Funeral of Manciple of Christ Church

The funeral of Mr Tom J Farnell, Manciple at Christ Church for many years, who died at 8 Fairacres Road, Oxford on Friday, took place at Osney Cemetery on Tuesday.  

The interment was preceded by a service at Holy Trinity which was conducted by the Vicar, the Rev T F Arber, assisted by the Rev O S E Clarenden, Vicar of Iffley, the Rev G C Bowring, Vicar of Thame, and the Rev W E Spencer, curate of Holy Trinity.

A large gathering of Mr Farnell's friends and fellow-servants at Christ Church attended, and there were also present the Dean of Christ Church and Sir Michael Sadler, Master of University College.

The mourners were the widow, Messrs R Farnell, C Farnell, A H Farnell and W Farnell (sons); Mr and Mrs J R V Johnson (son-in-law and daughter); Mrs W Farnell and Mrs R Farnell (daughters-in-law); Mrs W Forryan (sister-in-law); Mr F Burdon (brother-in-law); Mr P Forryan (nephew) and Mr A Hitchman.

Among the wreaths were those from Mr Michael Sadler, the Iffley Memorial Institute, the staff of Christ Church, the staff of Holy Trinity Junior Mixed Schools, the officers and brethren of the Loyal College Servants' Lodge of Oddfellows, and the Neptune Rowing Club.

The FARNELL Family lived in and around the Cumnor area (originally in Berkshire but now part of Oxfordshire).  They appear in the records of Besselsleigh, Cumnor, Oxford and Wolvercote.  The direct ancestry has been traced back to Jonathan FARNELL who was born at Besselsleigh in 1747.  

Jonathan FARNELL (1747-1821) was baptised on 20 Sep 1747 at Besselsleigh, Berkshire, England.  He married Jane (Abt.1748-1827) and they had at least 2 children (Jonathan  1775-1848 and James 1779-1850).  Jane was buried at St Michaels church in Cumnor on 26 Jan 1827.  

(Note: It is likely that his parents were Jonathan b. Besselsleigh and Ann Bailis who were married at Exeter College, Oxford, listed in the Kidlington parish register, on 24 Apr 1747)  

Jonathan FARNELL (1775-1848) was baptised on 5 Nov 1775 in Cumnor, Berkshire, England.  He married Rachael BASELEY (1776-1853) on 15 Nov 1804 and they had 7 children. (John b. 1800 (original surname was Baseley but later adopted the name of Farnell), Thomas b.1805-1807, Jonathan 1805-1807, Thomas 1809-1883, Rachel 1811-1902, James 1813-1851, John Charles 1817-1842).  They lived in Cumnor, Berkshire, England.  Jonathan worked as an agricultural labourer and farmer and Rachael is listed as a charity schoolmistress.  He died on 31 Dec 1848 and was buried on 5 Jan 1849.  His wife Rachael died on 4 Dec1853 and was buried alongside her husband at St Michaels Church, Cumnor on 8 Dec 1853.

Thomas FARNELL (1809-1883) was baptised on 8 Feb 1809 in Cumnor, Berkshire, England.  He married twice, first to Betsey PEPALL (1807-1849), they had a daughter Emma Bossom FARNELL (1833-1908), and secondly to Maria HICKS (1841-1884) with whom he had a son Tom Jonathan FARNELL (1857-1931).  Thomas and Maria lived at 39 Speedwell Street, St Ebbe, Oxford and Thomas worked as a Manciple at Christchurch College, Oxford.  He died on 8 Mar 1883 and was buried at Holy Trinity church, Oxford on 14 Mar 1883.  His wife, Maria, died on 12 Nov 1884 and was buried on 17 Nov 1884 also at Holy Trinity church, Oxford.

Tom Jonathan FARNELL (1857-1931) was born on 22 Sep 1857 and baptised on 10 Jan 1858 at Holy Trinity church, Oxford.  He married Elizabeth Radbone HEDGES (1860-1935) on 14 Jul 1885 at Wolvercote, Oxfordshire.  They had 8 children (Walter Charles 1886-1953, Reginald Thomas 1889-1963, Herbert Alfred 1891-1918, Elsie Florence May 1893-1896, Cyril Frank 1894-1979, Percy William 1895-1967, Arthur Henry 1898-1962 and Alice Marian 1901-1976).  Tom died on 16 Oct 1931 and his burial service was held at Holy Trinity church, Oxford on 20 Oct 1931.  His wife Elizabeth died in January 1935 and her burial service took place at Holy Trinity church, Oxford on 2 Feb 1935.
