What is it?
Eastern Canada’s most dramatic show of quilts, hooked rugs and artistic needlework is coming to Charlottetown. It runs from Tuesday September 10th to Saturday the 14th. It’s at historic and beautiful St. Paul’s church, presented jointly by the church and the Kindred Spirits Quilt Guild.
Stories in Stitches promises stunning colour, texture and technique as artisans from across PEI and around the Maritimes exhibit their craft. Close to 150 quilts, rugs and other artistic pieces run the whole gamut of fabric, fibre and needle crafts, in all styles from antique to modernist. What a great way to display these works of art: set out on the pews and railings of the church, against a background of richly warm woodwork, dappled with light from the stained-glass windows. The church’s beauty and acoustics will be on display along with the fabric arts, as gentle music plays in the background — “a feast for the eyes, ears, even the soul,” says organizer Carol Macdonald.
Why the title, ‘Stories in Stitches’? ... because there’s usually a story about why a piece was created — about a person or cause for which it was made, or about something that happened during the making. Items will be labelled with contact data and information about the history, intent and technique of the work.
What to Expect:
An exhibition of quilts (chiefly) but also hooked rugs and other artistic fibre/fabric and needlecraft …the fifth show since 2013. There are also demonstrations by skilled rug-hooking and quilting artisans.
The venue is St. Paul’s, the richly wood-worked Anglican church built in 1898. It is wheelchair accessible.
Some large quilts are displayed on stands; most works are draped or set on the pews and hung on the railings of the church. There is continuous supervision, and touching is controlled. Background music is played. There are demonstrations by a number of artisans.
A special feature: raffle of a queen-size Kindred Spirits quilt worth +/- $1800
Items will be labelled with contact data and information about the history, intent and technique of the work.
A fine opportunity for craftpersons to display their work, in a wonderful setting, to an appreciative audience of 1200, including many cruise-ship passengers. The previous shows (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019) have each drawn an appreciative audience of more than 1200, including many cruise-ship visitors.
