Quick Grievance Step-by-Step Guide
(For a more detailed procedure see attached document)
Determine what happened, when you learned about it, and what part of the contract you believe was violated or misapplied.
Within 15 contractual days of first learning the facts, tell your principal/supervisor you intend to file a grievance and discuss the issue informally.
If the informal meeting doesn't resolve the issue, file the District grievance form within 10 days of the meeting.
Include:
What happened
The contract provision involved
What you want done to fix it
Why you disagree with the decision
Your signature
The principal/supervisor has 5 days to provide a written decision.
If you're not satisfied, appeal to the Superintendent through HR within 10 days of receiving the Level One decision.
A Level Two hearing should occur within 10 days of the appeal. You should receive 5 days' notice of the hearing.
The Superintendent then issues a written decision.
If you're still dissatisfied, you have 10 days to ask the Association to take the grievance to arbitration.
The Association decides whether to pursue arbitration.
If it agrees, it has 5 days to submit the grievance.
Keep copies of the grievance, contract language, emails, decisions, and other evidence. Grievance records are supposed to be kept separately from personnel files.
